Is there any evidence for a Mk II version of the xf 2/90 coming 2023 ?

I am about to purchase  the wonderful xf 2/90 …

BUT IIRC I read some months ago that Fujifilm is about to modify the 2/90 or develop a Mk II Version .

of course, there is NO official statement of Fujifilm about that - but I don’t want to purchase one now and face a new lens anytime soon.. A new version will not make the „old“ one less performing at all - but in that case I‘d prefer to wait and just  continue to crop the shots I did with my 2,4/60…

Thanks in advance for your answers.

cheers

  1. Not that I’m aware of
  2. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the current one. It’s difficult to see what could even be improved upon to make a significant difference.

I can't agree more with your statement. When looking at the Mk I vs. Mk II lenses, there are several things which got improved: Lack of weather resistance, loud AF and maybe a bit slow or inaccurate AF as well as some improvements with image quality.

The 90 f2 already is a WR lens, has silent and fast AF. In addition it is already sharp wide open at f2.

I have bought the lens a few months ago and am very impressed, it quickly has become one of my most used lenses, my only gripe is the size and weight. Personally I never worried about a possible Mk II version, because the one which is available already is simply great.

I agree with you that it will be not easy to improve substantially the impressing optical performance of the current 2/90, I even stated that in my entry-posting…

but a 9-leave diaphragm instead of a 7 leave could perhaps improve a (very little) bit the bokeh and a linear motor/AF group  that does not rumble around while the lens is not active would nevertheless make me more happy - and optimistic about long-time reliability of the AF compound.

That‘s the reason why I asked for further info …

thanks for your answers.

I do like XF90/2 very much as well, and the only thing that I miss is lack of OIS - I know that there are no XF primes with OIS but I have no IBIS, so this the only "drawback" I could imagine in this almost perfect lens.

Optically it's superb, very sharp wide open and incredibly sharp stopped down. Very good AF, WR - what could be  better in MK2?

Cheers,

Artur

our postings crossed each other - so you missed perhaps what I wrote at the same time as you.

As for OIS and IBIS:

I really recommend to purchase a Fujifilm body with IBIS. It is really worth it.
The first time I took shots with my X-T4 and the 2.4/60 I was overwhelmed about the supersharp images handheld with 1/15 sec and even 1/8 sec exposure time.

Just breathtaking!

The X-T4 is a wonderful camera with not only perfect IBIS but a lot of features that help a lot in daily practice. You will never want to go back.

cheers

I don't have the 90mm lens but do ready Fujirumors from time to time. I haven't seen any mention of a mk II of the lens being made. The only lenses that's due for an update at this time is the 56mm f/1.2 (it's on Fuji's official roadmap), the 60mm f/2.4 is a possibility, too.

It’s widely considered one of Fujis best lenses and there have been no rumors. A google search under “fujifilm 90mm mkii” shows nothing.  You are safe to buy.

Indeed, you both are right - I forgot about the "special" primes - Thanks for correcting me.

So XF90  could get OIS as XF80 and XF200 have it. Of course as we can (hopefully) expect more IBIS bodies this may not be priority.

We may have crossed the line from amplification, through correction to pedantry and even showing off.

Re: Is there any evidence for a Mk II version of the xf 2/90 coming 2023 ?

I read a few different Fuji forums and don’t recall the 90f2 on the refresh list.

I’ve used only primes since I switched to Fuji 5 years ago and the 90f2, to me, is perfect.  It’s rendering and speed is incredible.  I used it mostly for sports/action/portrait, and looking at my collection, it’s netted me the most keepers.  If you can make the focal length work, you’ll be rewarded.

The 90f2 onwards seem to be more “modern” Fuji lenses.  They may have focused more quickly using linear motors and maybe had WR.  The 90f2 needs little improvement, in my non-professional opinion.     Some longer, faster primes would be more interesting to me.

Until then, I’ll drool over the 200f2.

I don't know where you read that. The 56 mm is the one that will be updated. The current 90 mm is WR has LM and has a great IQ.

would you really postpone the purchase of a lens based on (really nonexistent at this point) rumors? even if there would be any rumors that fuji is planning to replace the lens, it would be at least 2 more years before you could get to touch one...2 more years of possibly missed shots...

just buy the lens you want and need now. even if new, it will hold it's value very well. buy second hand and sell when needed with little to no loss

Hi Pictograph.

I don't know of any rumors around the 90/2.  It's already a great lens.  If they were to consider an upgrade the only things I could think they could improve would be to fix

  • the flare that fans never mention.  It can flare quite strongly.  I've long since given up trying to understand why some lenses do and some lenses don't, but if they could limit it more effectively, that would be a good thing
  • the lack of TC compatibility.  Why would you not make your longest affordable prime compatible with your tele-converters??!! If they could keep the performance but add TC compatibility., it would make a great lens even better.  (Yes, I know there's a 200mm lens, but that has it's own TC).

Regards, Rod

Like every one else said, no not likely to be replaced.

Although a little old, I consider this the the first of the current generation of Fujifilm lenses.

Theoretically they could make a slight update like they did with the 27mm. and just ad a Aperture luck and perhaps an ever so slightly boosted autofocus motor. But I don't this that would make wait justice.
