ZS100: assigning auto-focus home to a control

Hi all. I have a ZS100. I mainly shoot SAF using the center focus box with  a 1/2 press on the shutter button to fix focus/exposure and then recompose as needed. I have the touch screen enabled to use for diving into the controls. The problem is that I inadvertently keep moving the focus box around via unknowing contact with the live touch screen.  A bunch of times I've taken a snap shot only to see that I've shifted the focus box to a corner spot and missed focus on the desired subject.

Is there a way to assign an auto-focus home to the central focus zone to an external control so I can quickly re-center it before I focus and shoot? I can do it with my G9 but can't seem to figure out how/if the ZS100 will let me do it.

I get frustrated that I can't do keyword searches of the 450+ page manual.....

Thanks,

Alan

Re: ZS100: assigning auto-focus home to a control

Found how to do it:

1) Assign Fn1 button to "Focus Area Set".

2) Press Fn1 button

3) Tap on "Disp Reset" on touchscreen and focus box returns to home.

Re: ZS100: assigning auto-focus home to a control

Dear friend, if you are shooting with the good old Focus-recompose style using single focus point in the center, you might indeed disable the two touch AF features, i.e., Touch AF (when you are shooting with LCD) or Touch PAD AF (when you are shooting with evf).

P.61 of the pdf manual of ZS100/60

We can keep Touch Screen and Touch Tab active and no more accidental moving of the focus point. IMHO the well implemented Touch operation of Panasonic is very convenience for Menu diving, normal though LCD setting, operate the Q.Menu and to have 5 soft fn keys (and ad hoc soft keys in associated with the feature you are using) as well.

As you have found out that Direct Focus Area can change the focus point into customizable status, we can make use of this feature to enter a one time Touch AF operation (e.g. on a tripod etc, and reset it by activating the DFA again and hit DISP to return the focus point back to the center later) without messing with the Touch AF setting in Menu.

Happy shooting.

Centre focus and recompose is such a quaint old habit - I know as I've been doing it for years. Grow out of it. Explore and trust the other AF modes. On my TZ100 pressing the big menu button twice gets you quickly out of the point touch focus mode if inadvertently selected.

Re: ZS100: assigning auto-focus home to a control

My solution to avoid accidentally changing settings of any kind is to completely shut off the touch screen feature.

This made me laugh! Yes it is a quaint old habit but it's the way I learned, around 40 years ago with a Zenit E and Helios 44 lens. Yes, this old dog can learn new tricks and I'd never willingly go back to manual focus for most shooting, but I'd never willingly use multiple focus points either unless there was a clear advantage, eg for birds in flight!
