This plant/flower is listed as rare in Pennsylvania. Found a large group growing in a county not listed as having them. Konica Minolta A2.

I wonder why they are rare. And why you would come across several in one area. Could these be plantings in hope that it helps them to spring back? They are very plentiful here in the North Carolina mountain forests, in various colors.

That's a great photo, Joel, I'm glad you found and photographed it. It's such an ornate flower.

According to the Bonap's database they only exist in 2 counties in Pennsylvania; and they are rare within them. I found these in a different county on a trail along a creek that the Pennsylvania Fish Commission has it's headquarters on.  They do absolutely no planting beyond some erosion control trees.  I've no idea how they got there, but a friend of mine who is affiliated with Penn State is notifying the proper organizations. ...Thanks for the comment.
