Bridge Camera with 20MP and Super Zoom to the Moon

My Sony dsv hx400v doesn't function too well anymore.  I'm looking for something similar, but can't seem to find anything.  Does anyone know of a Bridge camera that has at least 20Megapixels and a super long zoom that I can easily take pictures of the moon?  I've been a beginner for a long time now, so want an easy camera.

The Nikon P950 should be a good candidate.

Don't let the 16 MP vs 20 MP put you off because the extra reach of the Nikon could make up for it.

In fact for your moon shots you should not have to crop very much at all with the Nikon ending up with a lot more pixels left compared with the Sony.

Mind you , for general use and don't mind the cost, the Sony RX10IV is very capable of taking moon photos.

Only 600mm equivalent but larger sensor .

I agree with Franco about the P950. I don’t shoot the moon but many people do. I use it for stationary birds and the reach is very helpful!

Sounds like you are looking for a Nikon P900 or P950 or a Kokak AZ901.  Not a cure all for everything, but one of the most fun cameras in existence.

Kodak PixPro AZ Series (Astro Zoom)

What I have seen from the AZ901 has been impressive so far. But for a little less money the AZ652 should more than fill your need as well as the frame. Under $400 US. And with the wide angle end you can get a shot of the whole field that the full moon is shining on!!

Re: Kodak PixPro AZ Series (Astro Zoom)

can't understand why so little information seems to be available on the Kodak cameras. They look to me to possibly be the best buy in this style cameras out there. I may just order one even though I have no need for it, just to see for myself how good or bad they are. I have never seen one in a real store to get my hands on. And dpr users and management seem to ignore them.

Only bridge camera I would consider is the Sony RX10IV

I am just over small 2/3 sensors. I have a hard time seeing how you would ever gather enough light on a time sensor to shoot the moon. I am not really into bridge cameras in 2022, so others will probably provide better advice. I recommend the Sony RX10IV based on the sample images I have seen. I have been very impressed with the Sony's image quality. The Sony RX10IV is expensive, but from everything I have seen it delivers amazing results for a 1 inch sensor camera.

I've heard some good reviews on the Nikon P1000 camera.  It's only a 16MP camera and a 1/2.3" sensor but was rated to be decent.

It has to do with being biased. And many years I have wondered why. DPR will post a thing about a Kodak-branded smartphone scanner and a novelty camera with one shutter speed and one aperture. But they have nothing to do with PixPro at all. Back 11 years ago when Kodak released the big superzoom Z990 MAX DPR only released the specs. Now with the AZ901 they should have already done a full review. That was 4 years ago. But, I'm sure the review would have been biased, so better they say nothing. There are several other sites that review PixPro and I trust them more.

If you do decide to give PixPro a spin you might want to think about a used one. You can most times get your money (or most of it) back if you don't like it and want to resell it.

Re: Kodak PixPro AZ Series (Astro Zoom)

I acually just checked something and was a bit surprised. Since covid I have about forgot about going into stores just to browse and handle most purchases over the net, even from local walmart - build an order over several days, then check out and drive in and they come out and put it in the car. It's terrible to get old and lazy, but ??  Anyway, last time I was in local Walmart they were basically out of the in store digital camera business and shelves empty, but checked today online and find that they actually have two models of the Kodak AZ series in stock right here in small town usa, but unfortunately neither of them are models with an eye level viewfinder and that is a requirement for my cameras otherwise I would likely have been headed in to Walmart if they had the ones with evf.

The Sony is no doubt a great camera, but not the same kind of animal as the Nikon P900-950-1000 series. Different tool completely.  For just plain fun they are at the top of the heap, but if you are going to blow things up to 100-200% on screen and be super critical, you would not be happy. The lure is silly things like below.  Standing, hand held by a shakey handed old man and just a flick of the zoom lever between photos. 24mm vs 2000mm EFL. Beach with boats is in appr. center of 24mm image. Distance about 3/4 mile

Looks like the camera is currently unavailable from the retailers I have checked (just interested in the background, not to buy). B&H said Oct. for availability.

I did find this review on the Kodak AZ652:

The Ultimate Kodak PixPro AZ652 Review! – Photography Paws

I have the Nikon P1000, and with that camera, software such as DxO Photolab, the the Topaz AI products all work well and can hide the extra noise when ISO creeps up high.

The AZ652 does shoot RAW, but I don't know if these applications support that camera.

*****************************************************

In looking at Topaz, they use LibRaw to access RAW files, and in looking at this page, I see many Kodak cameras, but not the AZ652;

LibRaw 0.20 supported cameras | LibRaw

I don't find support for it in DxO either;

DxO Supported Cameras & Lenses

Additionally, I looked for AZ652 support in ON1 Denoise, and didn't find it.

Re: Only bridge camera I would consider is the Sony RX10IV

Bob, I am sure you are right, I just don't have a lot of love for 2/3 sensors after owning many over the years. I am sure they provide value. I do like the Sony 1 inch sensor and find it does a pretty good job. I am probably just becoming old and stuck on my thoughts as I get older,

Hope all is well!

Completely understand the getting older part. I'm finding that it isn't as much fun as a thought it might be.

I think that a lot of those superzoom bridge cameras, like those Kodaks, are made by Asia Optical.

If you carefully compare specs and cosmetic you will find a lot of similarities.

This is a Kodak AZ652

and this is a Canon SX70

and a Minolta , just for fun

notice anything there ?

BTW, it does not mean you get exactly the same results because they can have differnt optics and firmware.

This is not a concern.  The moon is really bright, and a small sensor camera will not have any trouble with the moon.

I had a AZ901. Liked it, but it wasn't a month before it had sensor dust

dust on RH side

Maybe they seal them better now, or, maybe I was just unlucky. But that big zoom moves a lot of glass.
