macro 3d video

I did some macro 3d filming using two cameras on a rig. The rig has a half-mirror so I can have a small effective spacing between camera lenses ( about 10mm ).I was hoping one of the hoverflies would hover in front of the screen when viewed in 3d. This is filmed at 120 fps and slowed down to 30 fps as insects tend to move fast. Also at 120 fps I can sync the timing of the left and right clips to within 4mS or less.

Very nice, the macro looks great. I had a little trouble keeping the cross eye since I always do L/R parallel. I'm glad it wasn't too long. I might try and download it to my phone and use a stereo viewer. Keep up the good work.

How do you manage to see 3D materials in parallel on large screens, without auxiliary equipment?

Re: macro 3d video

I use the zoom feature to change the size of the images on my computer screen and then just look at them without a viewer. I had to do that to see his macro shot of the flowers and the insects. If I want to try and use a viewer, I would have to copy the video and try using software to rearrange the images.

I finally did put together a stereo GoPro system using two 3+Black cameras and it works well, but I'm want to try different lenses (5.4mm) to get a narrower view. The stock lenses are just to wide. They are each $100 so I'm taking my time with some other projects that need my money right now!

I have also been experimenting with shooting 35mm color negative film in my 1950 Stereo Rever, copying them with my Canon digital SLR and converting them to positives. It's a lot of work and I'm not always pleased with the results, but I work on the project when I have the time and ambition.  I even got a C-41 kit so I can develop my own film.  I still have a darkroom but converted the enlarger to work as a copy stand.

The bigger the 3D images, the better. But you make them very small to see them in parallel.

In cross-eyes mode they can be enlarged at any size and can be viewed without additional hardware.

Re: macro 3d video

I can enlarge the parallel view somewhat since my eyes can turn outward a little but cross eyed strains my eyes much more and after a very short time it's uncomfortable. To do parallel all I have to do is relax my eyes and I can do it easily for long periods. I have found that even using my Owl viewer or my old Underwood 1901viewer, if I make my images fill the print card (3.3 inch images on a 7x3.5 inches stereo card) they start to get uncomfortably large and look better at 3.0 inches.  I have also found that I can view larger images in the computer screen without a viewer by just moving further from the screen.

I call that a solid success!
