The most popular mobile OS in the world wasn't originally designed for smartphones at all.

"At the economic summit in Tokyo back in 2013, Andy Rubin — the co-founder of Android — revealed that Android was originally made for digital cameras.

And the best part even after all these years you still don't have an non-smartphone Android camera for the mass market.

You do have one or two models from yungnuo but they are impossible to buy outside china.

Makes sense. Early Android had bits of Java and Linux and was very "light". We have to separate Android from the interface to understand what's happening there.

It would be great if all cameras had an open, extensible, programmable, OS for adding custom functions. There has to be some way for that to coexist with firmware updates.

I was surprised when digging thru some menus on my Panasonic to spot a reference to "'nix" package (Unix/Linux). That makes sense. Why write a ton of code for WiFi connectivity when it already exists?

Samsung made one, but apparently it was not popular.

Compared to Open Camera, menu interfaces of ILC cameras seem really lame to me.

Interesting, thanks!

This was still a smartphone + camera, I was talking more on a dedicated camera without phone function and android installed.
