D500 - High Iso - Parakeets
3

Hi all,

Went for a morning session around my home to shoot parakeets in sorghum fields. Time is between 6.30 to 7 am IST.

I have never show with ISO more than 6400 in D500 but to not miss any action shots i raised the auto iso range to 12800.

Apart from noise and less detail, I am really happy with the processed images.

Basic edits in PS and Noise reduction using ON1.

Regards,

Deepak

The images look on the bright side to me which makes me think you did not need 12800. They also lack dark tones so perhaps you pushed the exposure too far to the right?

Thanks Brev. Yes, I opened up shadows 100% and exposure too. I kept it in Auto ISO and realised later it was pushing the limits.

For RAWs I can recommend DxO's 'Pure Raw' (or Photolab). Details are preserved, while the noise goes away. Noisewise it has stopped my urge to go full frame and given a seond life to my D500!

I was going to say if the RAW gets posted I'll run it through DxO.

IMHO you could have turned the ISO down to half that, they look like they got plenty of light. It looks like fun shooting those birds, the only wild parakeets we have around here are pet shop escapees.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I am just learning to edit photos, so i current simple workflow is Camera RAW adjustments in PS and noise reduction using ON1 NoNoise AI 2021. Below is the link for RAW files. Would highly appreciate if someone tries and brings the best possible output from this.

Deep Prime

This is about a 2 minute job, a quick once-over. I ran DeepPrime and did a bit of exposure compensation, contrast, and saturation adjustments.

If I get some spare time I'll try some more settings. The basic issues here were high ISO noise, which DeepPrime is good at, and a bit of being overexposed and washed out.

I think you did the right thing on the last two photos -- crop in close is the main thing. I took a quick run at the first two, using NX Studio and PaintShopPro with the Topaz AI Sharpen plugin and PSP's local contrast enhancer. I adjusted the EV by -0.75 and boosted brightness and contrast on the second bird in NX Studio, but left those things alone in the first. I'm not sure it makes much difference either way. Anyway, here are the results FWIW:

Thanks a lot for your effort sir. I have downloaded DxO trial and will try its noise reduction.

Thanks tclune for your efforts. Right, i basically set Auto-ISO and didn't bother much about high ISO but going by the comments it seems like it is worth setting the ISO manually to preserve details and colours.

AIUI the D500 is ISO-invariant from 800 (?) up. It seems perfectly reasonable to use auto ISO and concentrate on other things. It's a good idea to use as low a shutter speed as you can get away with, for example. Steve Perry advocates getting the shot, then lowering shutter speed gradually. This actually gives more light for the shot. The photos you posted have some haze, which may just be environmental and have nothing to do with the ISO. If I'm not mistaken, the recent versions of Adobe software have a haze filter, which should do basically the same thing that my local contrast enhancement filter does. It should be worth a try on these images. FWIW

I like the program.

One thing - the shot was not overexposed on the histogram, but it really looked that way. Were you shooting through mist or light fog? Haze from far away?
