Now that my TG6 side door is broken...

My TG6 side door has broken since last summer and service in my country seems to be quite slow and possibly also expensive. I am thinking of various options:

1) Get a new/used TG6 ... cost~ 400E

2) Get an underwater housing for my RX100VI. Sensor is larger but underwater focal length will be less wide since with the TG6 I was also using the wide extender allowing me to create more interesting shots (in my eyes )

3) Get an underwater bag for one of my ILC cameras. Not too fond of that solution as I am afraid of water leakage, but maybe able to use the EP7 with a wide lens..

Camera use is mainly for snorkeling, here are some samples:

Great shots…ive been thinkig of getting the tg cam since january. Held off thinking they might do a tg7 this summer, but crickets…

If there were a tg7 i think the choice would be obvious. Oly makes a wp housing that costs almost as mich as the camera, so thats an option too.

ive always been curious how a good iphone would do in an underwater housing compared to the tg6, if you have such a phone

Your shots make me want to just buy the tg6 already.

are those unedited?

The sony does not have a macro mode afaik, yoh might compare how close each one gets above ground. Id be curious about the differences myself as I was considerinng getting an rx100 as a general p and s cam, but one thing holding me back is macro. I often get the urge to do closeups of bugs and flowers.

Since you know the camera, get another TG-6 on line, at EBAY or similar.  Should be able to do a bit better than 400 EU. Let us know what you decided and how it worked out.

An expensive option, but you know the results you'll get. And, you can use your mildly fisheye wide angle adapter.

2) Get an underwater housing for my RX100VI. Sensor is larger but underwater focal length will be less wide since with the TG6 I was also using the wide extender allowing me to create more interesting shots (in my eyes )

The RX100 series has been quite popular with UW photographers. Use a good housing with a dome port and you'll have a fairly wide angle system. But you'll add a good deal of bulk and complexity. Packing the housing and taking care of it can be a bit of a chore. And depending on choices, this can be a very expensive option and even exceed the cost of a new TG6. I used a housing for years with FF and APS-C DSLR bodies. Today I'd probably use MFT gear to help keep the size down. But as I mentioned, UW camera housings requires some dedicated effort.

3) Get an underwater bag for one of my ILC cameras. Not too fond of that solution as I am afraid of water leakage, but maybe able to use the EP7 with a wide lens..

They will all eventually leak. They tend to be noticeably buoyant and using camera controls is typically awkward. Most have depth limits of around 4 meters, which eliminates them considering your diving skills.

What do you think?

I cannot believe that the door is very expensive if you can find it.  Most doors are pretty easy to fit.  Just guessing but all may not be lost with your current camera.  Alternatively you could look for a 'parts only' TG6 on ebay (there is one there right now) which would be more expensive but much cheaper than the new camera alternatives.

Good luck

What worries me more is that Olympus service support seems to be currently non existent where I live! I have called several times and nobody seems to be picking up the phone!

I checked the solution you mention but not sure how I will assemble the new door back into the body...

I have to disagree with attempting a repair on a compact camera yourself.   There's a reason that parts only cameras are for sale (the owners can't fix them).  You'll regret it if you try.

Re: Now that my TG6 side door is broken...

Considering your investment and skill with TG6 and accessories, I think you would be wise to get a good lightly used one, and keep your existing one for future repair.

Oly stopped supporting the Stylus 1 MANY years ago, they stocked zero parts, made no repairs. TG6's future ___?

btw, even with spare parts, you might have to find a willing repair shop. Here in USA, my favorite Mack Camera will only make repairs with NEW parts, even though I have a spare with many excellent used parts.

You know how handy you are, I do ok, but changing the lens on a Stylus 1 intimidates me, so my pair of spares that could be combined gather dust.

btw, I learned a long time ago to treat these little doors and covers more carefully than I treat the camera, they are nasty cheap thingys waiting to break IMO.

Not a bad choice. I like my LX100 II in the Meikon housing, though macro is obviously much less good than with the TG-6, but somewhat better than the RX100... are.

Cheers
