How to know when to sell your old system?

My X Pro 2 hasn’t been touched since I got my R6. My first impulse was to hold onto it. However, I could turn it into a lens for the R6. I’m really kinda torn.

so your anecdotal answers to this personal question?

*I’d keep my X pro 1 and most of my glass for the X mount for sentimental reasons.

Sell it...even though I don't know if that's been 5 min or 5 months.

I sold my entire M system to fund the switch over to an R7. RF or bust.

Get quotes from MPB or KEH and sell it while there's still demand.

Or keep it for sentimental reasons.

I sold my 90D and 5DsR almost immediately after receiving the R5. I foolishly held onto the 5D MKIV until I sold it last month. It hadn't been used at all. I still have most of the EF lenses I had as they work very well with the adapter.

The R5 is my only camera body at the moment. I have ordered the R7. I will very seriously consider getting the ultra-high megapixel camera body (R5S?) that is rumored for next year.

I shoot birds, nature, landscape, bench top macro, etc. At the moment, the R5 is handling it all very well.

i sold my nikon d500 and all lenses i thought could bring good money back home, i kept my d300s for the same reason i kept it when moving up to the d500, sentimental nonsense, with a few pieces of cheap glass just to keep it entertained (i also still kept my d60, which was my 1st dslr...), i don't think insanity should cost you too much...

I have a habit of keeping things for far too long, but sometimes it's very clear what to do. The R5 was my first mirrorless, but after a few days I knew I would never use the 5D4 again. I happened to see a chance to sell it quickly and painlessly, so I took it.

The 7D2 has been a different story. It has hardly been used since it was squeezed out by owning the previously mentioned 5D4 and a 90D. I've just accepted a trade-in price which is hundreds less than I could have got for it a few years ago when I should have sold it. Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course.

Don't get me started on the lenses I still own and should have sold years ago...

Sell the X Pro 2! A new or pre-owned lens that you will use is much better than a camera you will no longer use.

As for the sentimental stuff, you can always look at the photos you took with the old gear…maybe even take some photos of the old gear …

If I don't use it or plan to use it in the next six months, I sell it. Only exception is if the price offered is too low.  Then I keep it or give it away.

If you use it, it has value. If you don’t then it doesn’t. Then it depends on market value to sell, keep or help someone get started in the craft. I try not to keep gear that I don’t use if it has value by selling it to put towards gear I will use. Easier said than done though. I try to upgrade my big cameras every 3-4 years. I can usually sell my camera and pay an additional $500 to $1000 more to upgrade. I go used to used so I know everyone’s experience is different. I have learned through watching prices that if you sell gear you don’t use and change your mind down the road, you can buy it again at a much better price.

This. Once you are comfortable being on both sides of the buy-sell transaction, owning gear feels much more like long term rental. Not having gear that you don't use will save you money in total

Not always. I wanted to buy an x100f again.  They were going for $600-700 in 2019 when I sold mine.  Now $800+

Packed it up in it’s box today

Keep telling myself that I’m not shooting it. Still though, just a little sad to see it go.

One thing we often forget is the trouble associated with storing things we have no use for. Once you move house, you learn how much stuff you forgot you own.

I think of all the joy my old cameras could bring somebody else and sell it. Sometimes for peanuts, but the joy of not having to think about it anymore makes up for the financial loss.

+1

My strategy is to give away my old cameras and lenses to talented young photographers on a budget. That way the replaced gear can continue to please.

Some loose and some win. Ok so...

I shoot my R3 alongside my 6 year old 1DX II, and will continue to do so (until the R1). I did sell my other 1DX II body though soon after getting the R3!

Re: How to know when to sell your old system?

I realize this thread is older, but this question is relevant to my situation, if anyone is still following. Quick background, 61 y.o. most likely retiring in the next year and a half. I'm a golfer who took up photography because my wife loves to hike. in the hills around us (Berkshires in western MA) and I thought this would be a great way to spend time together. I only got into photography 6 months ago, and after researching cameras and speaking to friends, decided on the Canon 90D. I didn't know exactly what I wanted to photograph, but knew I would be doing a lot of landscape with some wildlife thrown in, and I was told the 90D would be perfect because of the high pixels, and being a crop sensor would help me with wildlife. Now that I'm 6 months in, I know landscape is what I'll be doing mostly, with a lot of nightscape thrown in. I have the 90D with the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6. I bought the Sigma 18-35 mm f/1.8 DC after reviewing "decent landscape/astro" lenses, the "nifty 50" as it was inexpensive and quick, and I was gifted 2 lenses (Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6Lll and Sigma 105mm f/2.8). I love the camera (still learning) but I really think I should have gone full frame (didn't know enough going in).

I can't afford to just keep buying equipment ($ as well as storage), so I'm torn. I'm going to stick with Canon d/t the lenses I own. Do I buy a refurbished Canon R or RP and keep the 90D, sell the 90D and buy the R6 mkll (though I'd be slightly stretching myself), or wait about 2 years and sell the 90D and buy a refurbished R5. Sorry this was so long to get to the question, but I've been doing a ton of research and I'm still torn, especially since in September, I'll be doing a northern Alaskan cruise and then spending 2 weeks in Alaska after the cruise. Thanks.

I would keep the 90D longer, you got a very nice set of lenses and I bet it can do everything you need as a hobbyist. 2 cents.
