Fujifilm APS-C can be printed on a 4 meters wide banner

Hi all

I just wanted to share an experience.

Sometimes I shoot photos in or for the company. Not in an official function, just when it makes sense and because I like it, and it is sometimes appreciated. It is a large and well-known international company. Yesterday, we had a corporate management event. Two of my photos were selected as the background. They were printed as huge banners, 4 m (13 ft) wide, ordered by someone else. Of course I was very curious to see them. As the banners arrived, I was positively surprised. It kind of made my day. The quality is stunning. You can even view the banners from a relatively short distance and still read a lot of details. I swear, looking at these banners, really no-one would ever get the idea to start an APS-C vs FF discussion.

I cannot share the images because they are from one of our construction sites, and there are people in the pictures.

  • One was done with the X-T20, XF 55-200 at 200 mm, f/6.4, ISO 200, edited with darktable,
  • the other one with the X-T4, XF 16-55 at 20 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, OOC.

But that's not the point. There was nothing exceptional with these images. There was no special processing, in fact, my original jpegs were sent for printing. They were just images that qualified good according to my own criteria, otherwise I would not have shared them with the company. I just want to say that I am deeply impressed by the performance of our X system.

Regards,

Martin

I’m sure Andy Mumford said there is one of his printed even larger than that at one of the Fuji headquarters in the lobby.

i don’t even know much about printing but still chuckle when people claim APS-C can’t print over 24” or whatever.

@Rightsaidfred, I am curious about the prints. Can you take a photo of a small section of the print, say from 2-3 ft distance, and share here? E.g., some part that does not show people, and illustrates the sharpness & resolution?

Please explain what you mean by "short distance".

When I look at photos from my X-E1 on a 22" monitor with WXGA resolution and 100% zoom, I see a section of a photo on the monitor that is about the size of a room door. I then sit 0.5 meters in front of the monitor and consider whether the photo is sharp or not.

If I look at the same photo on my 4.5K iMac, the photo is about 60...80 centimeters wide at 100%. I'm still sitting 0.5 meters in front of the monitor and now realize that the photo is extremely sharp.

Conclusion: the statements are very subjective. And they say little.

For photography, the resolution of the human eye and viewing the entire photo at a glance is still used as a standard.

On this basis, the term "depth of field" was derived many, many decades ago.

I've sorta been beating that drum for years.  Camera technology today is essentially science fiction compared to what I used in the '70's.  And yet, discussions of how many angels can fit on the head of pin are common place as respects resolution and sharpness (two different topics).

The technology in gear today largely exceeds  the needs (and skill) of most shooters.  It's just so good.

Not any more. The banners were coiled today. Before I took a snapshot of exactly such a section with my cell phone but there are exactly the people on it.

It doesn't mean a lot anyway. It is almost impossible to illustrate IMO, what would a cell phone shot of such a section demonstrate? Nothing can replace viewing the banners in original size.

What I can tell is that the resolution was better than I thought. I always thought you need medium format to print a 4 m banner but you don't, really.

So far, my biggest prints were about 1,05 m x 70 cm (3 ft 5 in x 2 ft 3.5 in). The banners were now nearly 4 times that length. And they were just great.

Martin

Not too long ago large banners have been printed from way smaller files than what comes out of the little Fujis these days and before that from 135 film etc... it's all so relative.

Nice article here. Enjoy.

Thank you, Martin, understand.

I yet have to get to large prints, and am curious how they come out.
