Yes, Nikon has better autofocus even in lower level models. A used D200/D300/D700 is good and cheap.

Canon is also good enough if your don’t take many photos of moving objects.

Hang on!

What about the 7D? It's at least as good as the d300.

Yes, every canon fans should get one 7d in their lifetime, sooner or later.

I got one, and it'll be my only camera for at least a year or two.

Did anyone tell you you will also need at least one good lens to go with that camera, and that the lens is often more expensive than the camera itself?

Of course, you could use the kit lens and produce washed-out looking images... Similar with what your phone produces.

Photography isn't cheap.... I learned that the hard way. Wish someone had told me that around 15 years ago.

The 18-55 kit lens with this T7 is excellent and will serve the OP very well. It may be the STM version which is a bit improved over the EF-S II version. The poster can add the inexpensive and outstanding 55-250 for $200 new if more reach is needed.

From what I've read and heard on this forum and elsewhere, I would not recommend the Canon 75-300mm lens.

Someone tried to give me one last year, just out of curiosity, I tried it. It is universally awful.

The STM version of this lens is very good.

I was referring to the 75-300, not the 70-300II which is the NanoUSM version.  That is the one referred to in the Dustin Abbott link.  I have never seen a 70-300 STM, maybe Canon made one long ago?

I don't think such a lens exists.

Do you mean the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM?

Speaking as someone who used both kit lenses one after another, here's what I think.

The STM version just feels a bit more solid, along with the obviously improved AF (which is indeed more-or-less silent).

As far as washed out images go, I disagree. It's possible to get sharp photos with either lens.

eg. I took these with the STM version. I know they're very low resolution but they are indeed sharp.

Ahh, USM and not STM
