What do you plan to do with you M gear?

I've heard enough comments flying around this forum about all the favorite opinions - how the M system will keep getting updates for years, the merits of the M system as it exists today, or how it's dead.

To me, what we actually plan to do with our gear moving forward is much more interesting than all the speculation and opinion.   So I thought I'd throw this poll out there to get some real numbers and see what most of us are thinking we'll do.  Plus, this may help us get above the loudest voices.

I picked the second option, but I'd say it will probably be in more like 2-3 years instead of 1-2, and it is contingent on the assumption that Canon isn't going to release any more M bodies or lenses outside of maybe another "firmware update" model or two. If they surprise us all and show they are actually interested in continuing to develop the system going forward, I'll stay.

I think you miss the massive amount of casual camera buyers, that decide the want a better camera than they have in the smartphone, they goto the shop and buy a set. The lens they buy with the camera, never leaves the body and after 4-6-8 years they either go for a new camera or they discovered photography is not for them.
millions of consumers are like that - they don’t care about system upgrades, etc.

i know many people like this in my circle of friends and relatives.

all you M forum people should stop with these posts the ‘end is near ‘ and soon the M sky will fall down on us’. Just chill and relax!

Oh, I totally get this.  There's definitely a lot of people that fall into this category, but I just thought it would be interesting to get a better idea of what people on this forum are doing - since we're mostly enthusiasts.

Looking at your gear list, I'll mark you down as option #5 = stir the pot.

I'm on the fence on brands. Eventually will need a replacement for my M6 and A7ii.

So far nothing in the price range i am looking at will improve upon the gear i have.

I will use the M until it dies. Hopefully Canon or Sony have pumped out a few more models by then to choose from.

Keep it. Use it. The M6II may possibly outlive me.

I doubt any newer model will look any different on my 27” screen. The largest prints I’ve ever had framed, have been 18 x 12, and are not likely to look any better with a different camera from whatever source of manufacture. I’m quite smitten with the Canon colours, so that would keep me in the fold.

Selected #2

I added an M6 II to my M, M2 and M50 a month ago. TBH, if I hadn't bought it then I wouldn't buy it now given the recent news. I spent two weeks on the fence thinking about a Sony A7C before coming to my senses and picking up the M6.

The "problem" is that the M mount is something special, something unique. Nothing really lines up with it. Small, light, affordable, great UI, great ergo, great AF, great sensor. And, for me, great lenses that are all I really need. (lol, why would I move on?)

So I'm back on the fence. Giving myself a week or two to decide whether I'm going to sell all my M stuff and switch to something else (Fuji, Sony APSC?) or just keep the M for the foreseeable future. Have a feeling I'll end up sticking with it for now.

Since buying the original M kit with 22, adapter and flash on fire sale from B&H the summer after it came out I have sold my Sony NEX 5n (first move to digital from film), Sony a850 (what a great camera) and a Canon 6D. Plus all the lenses, batteries, etc. that came along with each. The M has stayed and became my only system four years ago.

I think it is such a shame that we probably, at best, aren't going to see another high-end M camera. Canon has probably lost a customer in me because the R system, at the moment, is the least appealing of all my options if I want a new system.

My choice isn't present:

- I will stick with M as it meets my current needs, but will keep an open mind and a watchful eye on RF-S development.

If/when the native RF-S lens lineup grows to include key EF-M lenses at reasonable prices, I'd consider moving to RF/RF-S.

I really like the form factor of my M6 mkII; it's like the idealized version of my old PowerShot G10 I always wanted (except that it doesn't have stitch assist ). I find fully articulated screens somewhat awkward, while the tilt screen lets me hold it like a Hasselblad, which I find much more stable than holding the camera up to my face.

It's my choice for travel and leisure/casual stuff. As long as the camera functions (fingers crossed) there'll  be a good pool of EF lenses out there.

I actually got an RP before the M6 mkII. There's not that much difference in size, but the RP has an articulated screen. I wish they put the power switch in the same location on both, though. I didn't get any RF lenses for a long time because they were all big and heavy and expensive and back-ordered. My mediocre old EF 28-135mm saw a lot of use. When I got the M6 mkII, it was more lucky: it got the EFS 17-55mm f/2.8 USM I had for my 80D. That's the tail wagging the dog, though, so I got a EFM 15-45mm off eBay, which is not great but not terrible, and is fine as a walk-around lens. Some other EFM and EFS lenses round out the kit.

I recently got an R5, which is on a different level, to be sure. I even bit the bullet, and got some fast RF-L glass. I have a couple of projects in mind for it this summer, which is not far away. I hope I don't struggle to find a use for it after that .

If I could no longer use the M6, I would be interested in what Canon might have in the way of small RF mount cameras — with an M6 form factor. I'm hoping that won't be for a long time. For now, I find the two small, lightweight cameras for everyday type stuff, and a "big" camera for "serious" stuff is working out well for me, although it is getting a little expensive.

And they can all use EF lenses. Did I mention that

Well, I don't actually own any, at the moment, but I am seriously considering buying an M50 Mark II body and an EF-M 22 mm f/2 STM lens.

This combination might just be the best "fixed" prime lens compact camera on the market, and nothing else in Canon's lineup can match it. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find any other offering on the market that could compete with it on focal length, speed, features, quality, and price.

The closest you could get would maybe be a Rebel SL3 (substantially larger) with an EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 or EF 40 mm f/2 (disc), both of which are a full stop slower, or with the EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM, which is a telephoto v. a wide-angle.

If I do this, I will not be looking to invest in any other M gear. I will buy it and treat it as if it is a fixed prime lens viewfinder camera similar to my ancient Yashica Electro 35GX.

I currently have a slightly less ancient Rebel XSi with the EF 50 mm f/1.8 II that was gifted to me by a friend who no longer used it. I suppose I could spring for the EF lens to EF-M body adapter and use the 50 mm on the M50mkII, but I'm allergic to kludges.

If there were a pancake lens for the EF mount that was f/2 or faster, I'd have already bought the Rebel SL3.

I do expect that Canon will in the near future discontinue the M line in favor of the R line. but until there's an RF equivalent to the EF-M 22 mm f/2 STM, and an EOS R body that costs $600 street price, I have zero interest n the R line.

I totally hear you on this! I'd say this position is basically on the fence between options 1 and 2. Honestly, if the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 was already available in M mount, I think that would make option 1 an easy call for me.  I am considering both of those, and am trying to be patient to see what will unfold over the rest of the year.

The thing that makes it hard to be patient isn't that I'm worried I won't get decent value for my M gear if I sell them off in a couple of years. Instead, it's that if I wait too long to land on option 1 (stick with M long term) then I could miss out on the chance to grab an M6ii and maybe a EF-M 28mm lens while refurbs are still available.

Re: What do you plan to do with you M gear?

I’ve got a M50 and a couple of M lenses that I haven’t really used much since getting a R6.  I already sold my M6 mk2 but don’t think I’ll get anything for my M50 since it’s pretty beat up at this point so I plan to just hang onto it so I have something to use my 28 macro on.  I just enjoy that lens so much.  I doubt I’ll buy any more M gear.

I have 2 new M cameras and 5 new M lenses an will attempt to acquire a second copy of these lenses and possibly another M camera --because it is exactly what I want and it works for me and anything R is  simply  costly overkill for features i don't care about and pricey lenses  that won't serve me better than what I already have. This isn't that difficult.

For me, it’s not just key RF-S lenses, but also a good body - small (smaller than R10) and capable (R7 or better). Wonder if that’ll happen.

For now, M remains my travel camera!

The M served me well, but I decided to sell the entire kit to purchase an R7.

Should be a great backup to my R6 and provide lots of options with lens choices.

Still recommend the M if seeking light weight and small size for traveling.
