X100V Viewfinder question

I have a quick question regarding the x100v viewfinder and the review of the images in it. I shoot only raw and I don’t like the preview that you can see in the viewfinder after I take a shot or on the screen if you press play. If I understand correctly it show the film simulation set in the menu. Is there a way it would show raw preview?

No, because to my understanding the camera isn't really showing the actual RAW file, but rather a JPG preview which is included in the RAW. This JPG is always generated according to the settings you've configured inside the picture menu, like film simulations for example.

Besides each processing engine is different, so the X100V would most likely show a somewhat different image compared to Lightroom, Capture One or DXO.

You can set the film simulation to "Provia", which is meant to be the most neutral one.

You can edit the image in camera...

IF you want to play with the RAF image in the camera, including film sim. You can save multiple edits in the camera as JPG or TIFF files while keeping the raw file too.

I believe author Rico Pfirstinger documented some settings for a film simulation that will closely mimic a raw file. If you set your simulation accordingly, the preview should be close to a raw file. The settings might be found on this site via search, or you could also try Google, Bing, etc.

Re: X100V Viewfinder question

Doesn't the X100V have the ability to turn on "Natural Live View?" Basically displays what the RAW file would look like.

I'm not sure but my XT cameras have this option.

This . . . . .

Not sure if this would help you but maybe worth a try?

Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for. Now the preview reflects what I saw in the viewfinder when taking the shot.

The EVF is a preview of the chosen film sim and custom jpeg settings. If you prefer a “flatter” rendering than the standard Provia sim, simply choose a flatter/lower contrast option like Pro Neg Standard. As a RAW file is only unprocessed sensor data, it has no look of it’s own (it’s only a potential image). If your primary goal is to estimate RAW exposure, the highlight warning blinkies are the most reliable way to go - turn off the histogram, find combination of film sim and jpeg settings that will give you a good view of what’s going on, and simply adjust your exposure so that the brightest highlight detail you want to keep is just below blinking and you will get a near perfect RAW file to work with every time. The blinkies aren’t a perfect a RAW exposure meter, but (unlike the histograms) they are reliable and work very well with any film sim in any situation. As I’m sure someone will bring this up, using NATURAL LIVE VIEW will give an EVF view that will try to emulate an optical viewfinder - which might look nice, but has little or nothing to do with the exposure you’re trying to dial in, and the blinkies will not work properly either - kinda defeating the primary advantage of using a mirrorless camera. Not recommended.

Rico Pfirstinger points out:

The Natural Live View of the X-T3 extends highlight dynamic range by two stops, rendering the live view and live histogram highly inaccurate when shooting with DR100%, DR200%, or DR-AUTO dynamic range settings as well as DR-P WEAK or DR-P AUTO. Do not engage the Natural Live View if you want to use the live view and/or the live histogram to judge and set the exposure!

Thanks for a clear explanation of the natural live view. Been testing it now for a while and noticed that exact exposure problem. I will have to try those blinkers next. Thanks for the advice.

My bad, sorry.

To the OP, please disregard my suggestion I guess.
