Just a quick observation with the 300mm f4 and Starry Sky AF, I got amazing shots of Jupiter and its four Galilean moons hand held.  Tried the next night with a tripod (no star tracker) and not so good.  I put that down to the IS.

I would be interested to hear what your ISO and exposure times were for those shots?

Thanks,

Thanks,

It was 1 sec, f8 ISO 25600 but honestlly, it was an impromtu shot with little thought given to settings.  The image is not sharp but there was a destinct larger blob with 4 dots around it.  I checked the next night for movement to confirm that it wasn't just a small star cluster.  That's when I used a tripod to try and get a sharper image but it was ruined by the earth's rotation as expected.  The atmospheric conditions where I live are poor for astronomy.  When I'm next out west, I'll experiment more to use IS to counter star trails.
