4K crop factor

Just to illustrate the 4K crop factor on a Canon T8i, here are three screenshots:

The first is a still photo taken with a 55-250mm lens at 55mm.

The second is the same lens and same focal length at 30fps in full HD 1920X1080

The third is 24fps at 4K

I didn't change any other settings or angle of view.

Re: 4K crop factor

Canon is infamous for their annoying 4K crop.

But, as far as I know, full HD  should not have any crop, unless your have "digital IS" switched on.

Jethro,

I do have it turned on, and yes, the digital IS does add a crop factor on top of your ASP-C camera's regular 1.6 crop.

The Canon T8i provides for the ability to crop out individual frames from your 4K videos.

One way I can see using this is extending your focal length for wildlife or something, and then cutting out an individual frame. I've read that 4K videos are soft, but so far, in good light, the videos appear to be crisp and clear.

So far, I haven't tried uploading them anywhere because they are so large. I've taken a couple of short ones remotely using my tablet and then playing them on my tablet.

On lower end cameras it’s because the CPU can’t process downsizing the resolution fast enough to use the full image sensor. So it’s cropped down to 8 MP of the image sensor
