Canon R3, inconsistent exposure

Hi all. I shot my first big shoot with the R3 but I got very inconsistent results. Most noticeably with the exposure between frames, sometimes up to 2 stops either over or under. Has anyone seen this, or have any tips for improving consistency?

The settings are below, trying to stick to relevant ones;

  • Raw format
  • Aperture Priority
  • Auto White Balance
  • Manual ISO
  • Auto Lighting Optimiser; Standard
  • Highlight Tone Priority; Off
  • Anti-flicker shoot; Disabled
  • Metering Mode; Partial
  • White Balance; Auto
  • Drive Mode; Single
  • Shutter Mode; Electronic
  • Firmware: 1.1.1

Thanks in advance.

Partial metering only uses a small part of the frame at the centre of the FOV. Can you show us some examples?

You don’t say what lens you are using, but it could be the lens contacts that need cleaning

ALO and partial metering might be contributing to your issues but with any photos with exif it’s just a hunch .Also what software are you using for converting your Raw’s ?

Thanks for your reply - I was getting the same result with 3x lenses;

  • Canon EF 16-35 f2.8L IS mk3
  • Canon EF 24-70 f2.8L USM mk2
  • Canon EF 70-200 f2.8L IS USM mk2

But thinking about it, perhaps the Partial metering mode might be largely the culprit.  I'll try full Evaluative metering.

Yes I think the Partial metering mode might be largely the culprit. I'll try full Evaluative metering.

I'm using Lightroom with the latest Camera RAW.

Re: Canon R3, inconsistent exposure

As a long time 1 series shooter, it’s disappointing that Canon saw fit to drop the spot/partial metering based on the focus point for the R3. As Canon’s current flagship mirrorless camera I would have expected it to have this feature.

That said, I have found Evaluative metering to be pretty good and am used to compensating for specific subjects that require it. At least I can configure the R3 to set Exposure Compensation the same way as I have it on my remaining 1DX II.

ALO is not recognised by third party converters so your exposures could look different from the rendering in Canons DPP. ALO has it’s uses for jpeg shooting but should really be disabled when shooting Raw combined with third party converters .
