Selling my XT4 and lenses. All in on X100V

So, after some considerable thought and dust collecting on my shelves, I’ve decided (almost) to sell my hardly used XT4.

I have an XT4, X100V and X70 along with a 16 1.4 lens (sold yesterday) and 35 1.4 lens. I’m a hobbyist and have occasionally done paid food photography shoots which I’ve ended up using my X100V for but find I almost always pick up my X100V
I have a baby on the way and decided to sell things I don’t use for space rather than money and my XT4 just never seems to be picked up. I feel I can get by with the X100V and the X70 for most things.

Has anyone else done the same. How has it gone so far? Alternatively, I could sell the XT4 and get a cheaper body. I don’t do video really but don’t want to limit my photography of my new child in anyway.

would love to hear your thoughts.

If you’re not using your gear, and you don’t see yourself using it in the future, I would wholeheartedly agree that it’s time to sell. The longer you wait, the less you’ll get for your gear.

How's the AF and AF-C performance of those bodies? Is the X-T4 better than X100V or vice versa? With the baby, you'd want reliable AF, especially in low light. I only had a Canon Powershot when my daughter was born, it wasn't able to keep up, especially high ISO shots were so noisy (taking pic of her sleeping). Soon your baby will be crawling around, too, reliable AF-C might be even more important.

If you shoot mainly with primes, then the X-T4 has the obvious advantage of IBIS. Taking pics of your sleeping baby, for example, can be 1/15 or 1/30 for cleaner shots. The majority of your shots will be indoor low light, at least for the first few years.

I bought an X100V two years ago. Since then I barely picked up my X-T30, then sold it for an X-E4 about a year ago thinking it could replace the X100V. I’ve used the X-E4 a handful of times but my X100V goes everywhere with me. There’s something magical about it! For me it’s the combination of focal length and leaf shutter. It’s a perfect grab and go camera especially when you’re wrestling the stuff that comes with a baby! I have a 4 year old now and would highly recommend it for family shots.
By the way, outside of family stuff, I mainly do street photography. If you like the 23mm focal length then it’s a perfect street camera.

For sure there were reasons why you bought the XT4 and the 2 lenses. If such reasons are not valid any longer, sell the gear.

I could see selling it for the money, but I can't imagine that it takes up that much real estate.

Just because you aren't using it much right now doesn't mean your priorities might shift at some point. Yes, the longer you hang onto it the more the resale value decreases but you indicated that it wasn't about the money IIRC.

Also, what if something happens to your X100V and you've sold your other option? It also might be nice to have a zoom on that XT4 to increase it's versatility. Sell the primes and get a 16-55 or equivalent and use the X100V as your prime lightweight kit.

However, I get that minimizing your choices can help when it comes to analysis paralysis.

Just my thoughts. Good luck with everything, and welcome to parenthood.

An X100V is great for baby pics. Terrific camera that works great, feels great and looks great.

My kid was born in 2020, I’ve used my phone more and more for snapshots, my camera less and less. Whatever camera you honestly think you’ll pick up and use is the one to go with.

Congrats on the baby! I love parenthood so far. Absolutely wonderful.

We're all different, I'd do the opposite and sell the X100V and buy a 23mm f/2 for the X-T4.

There's a lot to be said for using the camera that is most fun to use though, and that sounds like the X100V for you.  If you don't need the money, I'd hold onto the X-T4 kit, sometimes things can change in the future and you might avoid "gear churn" by holding fast.

Best wishes and congratulations with your new baby, thank you for sharing.

Congratulations with your baby!

I am planning to do the same with my Canon FF set... sell it for X100(Next) or - maybe - for Leica Q3, whatever comes first. Anyone interested? Haha

Because of crop, it is ~35mm

PhilT:

From a a father and grandfather perspective: The X100V will ve sufficient for 1.5 years, then he is going to be running, and climbing  all over the playgrounds, you are going to want a longer lens.... me be by that time you can get a used X-H2 for the same price :-), at 5 years you will want an even longer lens

I think if you’re only shooting family/documentary style, the X100V will do the trick. I have an X-T4 and an X100V, and the X100V is probably my favorite camera I’ve ever owned. I love the 35mm focal length and it’s so easy to carry everywhere. With a baby, you’ll end up carrying lots of stuff, so anything that’ll lighten the load is worth it. I’ve got a 10 month old and a 3 year old and the X100V is always my go to.
That said, I still want a system camera so I can do wildlife and landscape and portraits. I often keep my X100V and my X-T4 with a prime handy around the house.

I'd keep the 35mm f/1.4. As another poster said, most of the photos will be indoors in low light. Also buy a nice phone with a decent camera for your wife. A lot of the action tends to happen when you've not got your camera on hand. I also bought mine an instax wide printer, which is the perfect size for her Iphone photos. Anything bigger and they fall apart.

What burdens you and or doesn't get used - sell it. But: The x100V is a special camera. A fixed focal lenght of 35mm is limiting. Some love that. For me, it was too limiting. So I sold my x100v for an X-E3 (and now X-E4) cause I can use wide and linger focal lenghts and zooms. The "always on" option for me is my Google Pixel 6 which I use to document everyday life and family.

I've owned Fuji-X gear since the X100S and X-T1 were released.  Over that time, my personal shooting preferences continuously changed.  i started primes X100S only, went primes only with the X-T1,  and am now currently back into my zoom phase ---- although on my current trip to New York City, I find myself using my 18/1.4 (never should have gone into B&H) more than any other lens.

So things can change over time.  But, if you are tempted to go all in on the X100V, why not?   I think the X100V has all of the things I enjoy about shooting Fuji-X.  You just got to be very sure 23mm focal length is right plus the X70 are all you need.

In another year, there will be an X-T5 and newer lenses.  In two years used X-T5s will be available.

I did. the same some time ago, but I hated to fiddle with the converters. My preferred FL are 18 and 35 - a lot of screwing on and off. I am now  owning a XE4 which has a similar size and UX, and real exchangable lenses…
