New X-S10 owner help.

Just got my new X-S10 in the mail yesterday and upgraded to the 2.30 FW.  I am coming from the X-E1  (and a Nikon D90 so I don't mind the PASM dial) but am mystified by some of the settings.  A lot of them didn't exist on the XE1.

I think I want to mimic the XE1 in UX/handling functionality as closely as possible since that will still be my backup camera and want to keep things similar between the two.

I find the manual a bit dry in its explanation of the settings and the FW update introduced new ones as well.

Anyone have a good reference to a website/PDF that runs through the settings (that isn't a youtube video...  I guess I am old and prefer reading things... ) and explains their purpose.

Maybe the manual is actually the best for this, but its just so dry.

Hi,
I'm a little intrigued.
You want a 'juicy' explanation, because the text of the manual is too 'dry', but you don't want it to be a video.
You want to make the settings of two cameras to be similar, but you buy a second camera with completely different controls (PSAM) versus fujifilm classic (beloved by those who are from the film days, as I am (and you say you are old).
I can't find any juicy text, but the quickstart manual from fuji seems pretty nice.

If I were you I would get over your disapproval of video, and watch Maarten Heilbron's videos. Very nice, civil and comprehensive ...

I have this eBook, and it is a very good resource. I don't think it specifically references the X-S10, but the UI concepts are very similar, if not exactly the same as the other X series bodies.

I take that back. I see that it has been updated to include the X-S10.

Not "juicy" perhaps "dry" was the wrong term... just more explanation behind the settings in plain language with perhaps with a bit of this is what its useful for... or the setting implies this, but this is what it actually does.   The manual just tells you what the setting is.  The quick manual looks to cover it fairly well.  My "dry" was referring to the printed full manual, so thanks for the link.

As for video, nothing wrong with video... but for something that is a reference/list of settings, I would prefer not having to pause and rew/ff to get to each setting. If "chapters" in the video are setup its not so bad as you can jump to specific parts but I just feel this information is better as text and photos of the menu itself as its easier to refer back to, rather than loading and buffering a video...  but thats just me.

As to why XS10 vs. other fuji cams with classic control scheme, mainly the grip and price.  I liked the XS10 I held and it was in the budget, though I knew it would be a slightly different handling but its not massively different.

I can set the pasm dial to M and use the aperture ring on the lens just the same, there is even a blank knob that could be good for shutter speed (though I am not sure if it can actually be mapped to shutter speed and you'd need to rely on the display to see your shutter speed  at a glance. )

It's a not a large difference, but different enough.  Joystick vs DPad...  only thing I am genuinely missing is the rear scroll knob.  And thats where you did your focus peaking.  The XS10 has a front one, but no rear one.

Mind you I am only coming from an XE1 it doesn't have all the same UX as later X cams...
