Canon 3ti - Camera not booting sometimes.

Told this post was in the wrong area so

Canon 3ti

The camera will not turn on when some SD cards are within it. It will not turn on sometimes with all cards, but by removing the battery, removing the card, and putting both in some cards more than 80% of the time will have the camera turn back on and read the card. Removing all cards, removing and replacing the battery has the camera turn on again.

But then opening the card lid causes the camera to stop working. Some cards after doing the double replace will then work in the camera but some cards perhaps the high sizes (400 gig) which worked before will not allow the camera to turn on. The power light blinks for a few moments and the the camera is dead.

I suspected dampness or temperate change both which seem to correspond with this problem appearing. Sometimes after several weeks the camera works normally but then the problem reappears as is the case now - usually after a humid day or a cold one. Any experiences on a more permanent fix for this problem other than card swapping and waiting till it goes away again?

Sorry, I don't really understand your problem.

But, I do know:

  • The camera is programmed to stop working when the card door is open. This is to stop accidents happening. If you open the door while the camera is writing to the card, it'll start beeping and displaying a warning.
  • Have you tried formatting all the cards with the camera? That could potentially solve your problem.

I did  not know that . Well thats good. So the problem is that some cards, which I did try the format option, cause the camera not to fully turn on. Sometimes it makes beeps when the shutter button is on, at others its totally dead.  Change cards and it works.  It happened with all cards for a while, now only some cards - larger cards of >300GB or so.

I've just checked and the t3i is only compatible with cards up to 128GB.

Maximum Memory Capacity: 128GB

AH thats weird as it did work before. And am currently using a 256 GB card now.  However the camera write very slowly now that the card is near full. So I guess 128 GB works fine and then funky things happen

But it does explain the issue. BTW where did you find the info?

I suspect that spec is wrong. 128 just came out with the EOS 600 - often in the past the capacity is larger because of that fact - the known limit was 128 and a theoretical limit was greater.

T3i is a very old camera that can’t expect to work without errors with cards produced well after the camera was launched. not that in newer canon Rebel specifications, it lists UHS- abilities which the very old T3i does not

It seems as the OP’s problems were user errors.

Re: Ah ha!

Yes I have not used a 128 gb card in the camera for a VERY long time.

Never occured to me that it had a limit, thought I have meet that problem a fair bit back in the day when new cards came out yearly and last year cameras just could not use them

UPDATE ON booting problem

Update T3i card problem (for DP review) Update T3i card problem (for DP review)
Somebody suggested that my problem of my T3i not turning on was its card limit of 3ti. At first I thought this was the case: it was werid since I have used cards up to 400 gig with the unit, but I thought perhaps when the card gets full of data it fails. So I used card with 128 gigs or less. And it still fails to work with some card. Sometimes, it works, and sometimes it does not. The werid thing is that the camera does not say no card, or just gets confused, putting in a card causeing the canon to fail to turn on, and it will not turn on until the battery is removed, put back, and a compabitlbe card nad battery are entered. Its a shame, since if it was just the 128 gig card issue I could just use smaller cards, but it seems somewhat random. It is true it seems to fail now with all larger cards- so far ever 16 gig card has worked but at 64 gig or higher it is hit and miss, and perhaps the same with the lower cards too, and it just been chance they have worked up to this point. I have read that when the model came out a simlar defect appeared from the factory, but its been workign for years without said defect. Any suggestions?

Re: UPDATE ON booting problem

New camera???  This is a rather old camera, not sure it's worth repairing.  You could find a used camera for a reasonable price, especially with people moving over to mirrorless.

Re: UPDATE ON booting problem

Why don't you just use smaller cards?

It's actually best to use lots of smaller cards (for safety reasons).

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a 400gb card, but, seriously, Are you ever going to actually store 400gb of photos at once? My whole RAW archive is only around 500gb.
