Power Shot Gix Mark III won't take photos

Hi -- I have a new Canon Power Shot G1X Mark III. I pulled it out of the box today and charged the battery. The batter is fully charged and there is a memory card inserted in the camera. When I press the on/off switch the green light comes on and the lens automatically pulls out of the body of the camera. In other words, the battery appears to be working. But ... nothing else works. There is nothing in the view finder and nothing on the touch screen. Pressing the shutter button does nothing. Pressing the menu button does nothing. The only button that makes anything happen is the on/off button. Any thoughts on what's going on and how to make this work?

If you haven't already done so, I would remove the battery and memory card and start again. You indicated there was a memory card inserted. Did it come with the camera or did you insert a new memory card? You can also check the manual online. I googled your problem but didn't find anything other than for the camera not coming on at all. If it still doesn't work you should call the dealer you brought it from immediately for a new camera or refund.

Since pressing the menu button does nothing and pressing the shutter button does nothing, not even a sound, it’s probably a faulty unit. As suggested turn it off and remove the battery and on again and see what happens. Also make sure the SD card is pressed all the way in correctly and stays in place. But no menu probably a bad camera.

No perfect gear out there. Just be happy with what you have and go shoot.

Is this a new cam? If used how old is it?

It's brand new. Right out of the box.

Re: Did you remove the lens cap?

Yes. I've tried it with the lens cap off and the lens cap on. Still nothing.
I've tried a different battery and I've reinserted the memory card. Nothing.
As I said, the lens will pop out when I hit the on button, and it will retract back in when I hit the off button, but nothing else is available. I cannot see anything in the viewfinder or on the screen, and none of the buttons work (other than hitting the playback button, which retracts the lens, but does nothing else.)

Okay, since it's new and you have tried a different batt, try a different mem card, just to be sure (I had a similar issue not with my G1X3, but with a Pana cam, many years ago.)

If you still get the same result, I would suggest that you return the cam for a refund or exchange.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. After many attempts to make it work, the camera was obviously flawed, so I sent it back.

Thank you for the update.  It is much appreciated.  Sorry it didn't work but glad you're sending it back within the return date.

Very odd to see this happen with a new G1X3.

Will you let us know what they found once it's repaired?
