Another Panasonic for dummies question

Still learning the ropes on my ZS100. Just noticed this one.  I have sort of semi defaulted to running -1/3 stop exposure compensation to slightly bias the metering, but just noticed if I go into full manual (turn dial to M), in which I would still be using the camera's meter for guidance, my -1/3 compensation is now 0. Dial it back to aperture priority or ?? and the -1/3 stop comes back. I am pretty sure none of my other cameras act this way.  Is this normal, or do I need to change something?  Another quickie, the other day I somehow got it stuck in the 4k burst mode - I have no idea how, and almost thought I was  going to reset back to factor to fix it. Finally pushed enough buttons to get out of it. Any guess what I had messed up to get there?  Thanks - you guys are great to put up with me.

There is not really any exposure compensation for a camera in manual mode. You set the exposure. Now there is usually a metering indication on the display. Nothing says you can't set the camera to be 1/3 of a stop off the suggested exposure when you are in manual mode. Essentially doing the same thing as dialing EC in when in an automatic mode.

There’s no exposure comp in manual mode , you just change your settings to get the exposure you require .

Simply select your iso , f stop and shutter speed , then try adjusting just one setting and watch that ‘0’ change +/- as you do so

Bob,

Exposure compensation is forced to zero in M Mode.  That's a restriction if you want to run  ISO=Auto, but if you're at fixed ISO you can adjust the aperture+shutter+ISO settings to achieve whatever EV you want.

Thanks, I understand that, was just used to seeing ex comp biasing the meter, so  in manual centering the needle so to speak, gives the predetermined comp.  I can do it like you say though, so all's fine, just different.

Thanks, and understand.  Just thought maybe there was some way to get around remembering to bias manual adjustments off center.  I'll get used to it. Just one of the fun parts of stepping into a different menu system and brand.

M mode of Panasonic has been developed through 3 stages over the years.

  • For the oldest models, Panny adopted a policy of M is M. Manual ISO only, no Auto ISO. Since EC is an instruction not only to tell how much we wish to bias on the camera's metering, most importantly it asked the camera to do corresponding adjustment on parameters to reflect the amount of exposure biased. Since M mode of this generation of Panny cameras did not have any parameter it can adjust (all 3 parameters were manually controlled by shooter), EC is meaningless and so it is not supported.
  • For later models (M mode of my GX7 was the last of M43 released in 2013 does not support Auto ISO, might be around similar generation of compacts too), Panny camera M mode support Auto ISO. However this short live generation of models did not support EC. I think ZS100 is one of this generation of models. It is strange since some brands already allow EC...
  • For latest models, M mode of Panny cameras supports Auto ISO and allow EC.

EC for M mode + Auto ISO in reality is adjustment on ISO by the camera. Therefore, we can do the same by manual ISO setting with reference to the in-camera exposure meter.

As per the manual, M mode of ZS200 supports Auto ISO and EC.
