T3i 600D video vs Smartphone video

I've recently been starting to try out some video work with my 600D, and the quality of the video is very disappointing.

I know that the 600D shoots still photo primarily, but at this point I'm starting to think that a modern smartphone with a much smaller sensor will have better video quality than the 600D, or is it a obvious fact that it is?

I really do appreciate the video crop mode on the 600D though.

What would you expect?

Your 600D was released in February, 2011.

You are comparing digital devices released more than a decade apart.

The device which is newer will win almost every time.

I have a 600d. I'm actually in the process of selling it, but not because of the video.

You are right, the 600d does not have very good video quality.

Also worth mentioning is that the 600d (like most DSLRs) doesn't focus during a video. This could impact sharpness.

But, the good news is, newer DSLRs do have video AF. The 750d has good video AF, while the 800d onwards has canon's excellent "Dual Pixel AF".

that's the problem i had with mine, so i gave up and bought a video camera for videos back in the day.  the T4i was better with focusing using the new EF-S STM lens for video.

Come to think of it, a 100d (SL1) would provide good video AF for about the same price as the 600d.

It's live-view/video AF is better than the 650d/700d/

As was pointed out, the cameras made more than 10 years ago are not something that should be compared to, to other modern devices (especially video). Try looking at one of the more modern Canon DSLR or mirrrorless cameras. The designers make a huge effort for improvement each generation. The technology changes all of the time. You might want to read about it.

I know very little about video except for a few times recently that I have used it with my Canon T7i (800D) and Canon M50 Mark II cameras (that's why I suggest reading about it). I was very happy with the results. I was more happy with the Canon M50 Mark II for video because I could use the viewfinder if I wanted, plus at least one other reason. On sunny bright days it was hard to see the image in the LCD screen. I did have any accessories with the cameras for these video tests, but still the sound was excellent too.

But for still photography under ISO3200 or so, the Canon T3i (600D) camera was great as shown below. I used mine for a long time. Then I upgraded for one reason to explore taking video pictures, because I knew it was important to have something that was more up-to-date.
