850D (T8I) OR M50 Mark ii

I was told the M series is going out of production.

I am undecided and want to buy a camera and on the one hand the M50 is smaller and it has no mirror and on the other hand the 850D has a lot of lenses and there is also a LIVE mode that gives a comparison to the advantage of the mirrorless. The prices of the cameras are the same in my country. What should I take?

I bought two Canon M50 MKII cameras, each with their own EF-M lens.  I also have three Canon T7i (800D) cameras which are very similar to the Canon T8i (850D) camera.  If I had to choose between the two with what I know now I would pick the Canon T8i (850D) camera.

The reasons for the T8i (850D):

1) The OVF is easier to see through than the EVF.

2) There's a wider range of lenses available that do not need an adapter.  It would work well with something like a Canon 100-400mm lens or Sigma/Tamron 150-600mm lens.

What I don't like about the Canon M50 MKII:

1) I do not like the sensor that automatically shuts off the LCD screen if a person gets too close to it.  I like to use the LCD screen and viewfinder, both at the same time.

2) I like the smaller size of the Canon M50 MKII, but in some ways it is too small.

In general:

From my perspective, there are still too many growing pains with the Canon mirrorless cameras.  We don't know for sure, but in the future Canon may only have a RF mount, for both full frame and crop mirrorless cameras.  The may abandon the EF-M mount for lenses.  Again...but we don't know for sure.

I still like all of them, including the Canon M50 MKII.  I'm just giving you a brief answer of what I would pick, if I had to choose between the two of them.  There's probably more reasons, but those are the ones I can think of that come to the top of my head.  Definitely I would choose the Canon T8i (850D) camera.

I thought of something else. I should mention a reason that the Canon M50 MKII would be better. If you take a lot of video instead of still photos, I think the Canon M50 MKII would be better. When we are taking video with the Canon DSLR cameras we are forced to use the LCD screen (or just aim the camera and hope). On bight sunny days, it's difficult to see what is being video taped (when the sunlight is directly on the LCD screen). But with the mirrorless cameras, we can use the EVF viewfinder for better composition. I played around a little with video. I should remind myself to do more. That's a plus for the Canon M50 MKII camera that I'm glad I remembered.

So if I want only photos and not video I should pick the t8i?

Thanks for the comments 🙂

In my opinion with what I know, yes...for still photography the Canon T8i (850D) camera would be my pick.  Have you searched on-line for comparisons?  You might want to do that too.

Check cameradecision.com.  That will give you a really nice comparison.

For what it's worth -- Which may be something or nothing -- I find the T8i (which I own) to be just marginally big enough. My hands aren't beefy but they're fairly large with long fingers. Ideally I'd find an even larger body more comfortable to hold. I had a battery grip on my last DSLR, which helped quite a lot.

But once again your experience may vary.

I don't have either cameras.

But beware that both canon DSLRs and EOS M are more or less over. If anything, the future is slightly brighter for EOS M.

Canon is (probably) announcing 2 new APS-C mirrorless cameras on the 24th May, but they will be part of the RF mount, not EOS M.

I think you should see if you can live with the M50's EVF lag and blackout.  This is why I bought the SL2 over the M5.  This is more of a problem for burst shooting but does show up in other use cases.

Battery Life

Last year my wife and I went to Europe to celebrate an anniversary. One day I took 578 pictures with my 850D/T8i on a single battery charge.

I doubt that there is a mirro-less anywhere that can do that. I still carried a spare, but I only used it when I failed to charge the battery overnight.

Re: 850D (T8I) OR M50 Mark ii

I wrote this on the other forum, but I think the first questions that need to be asked are:

What is your budget?

What type of photography are you interested in?

What are your other requirements like small and compact? More ergonomic? Battery life etc

Too many people in these types of threads say you must get this camera and this lens without knowing what the OP's requirements are.

I do agree with the wait until the R10 is announced (potentially in the next few days) to see what that's like.

Just because these systems may be discontinued doesn't mean the second hand market is suddenly going to dry up.
