How to stop G5xii from zooming beyond optical zoom but still allow digital?

Hi,
I had this same issue with the G7xii and now the G5xii:

When I am zooming, I want it to stop at the end of the optical zoom range and then require me to zoom again if I want to go into the digital zoom range.

The camera does not have a stop at the end of the optical range by default and I always end up going into the digital zoom when I do not want that.

Funny thing is that there is a "stop" at the end of the 1st digital zoom (10x I believe), but not at the end of the optical zoom.

I have searched the settings and I can only find the option to either turn off or turn on the digital zoom but not one that will let me have a "stop" at the end of the optical zoom.

Have a missed a setting? If so, where is it?
Thanks!
Paul

May not be exactly what you are looking for...

but in the user manual it does mention that

(1) there is a display indicator to tell you if you are zooming beyond optical zoom or not

(2) you can simply deactivate digital zoom

Alternatively, you can choose to use RAW+JPEG mode. By including RAW, the camera cannot go beyond optical zoom. You can switch back to JPEG mode if optical zoom is desired.

Right that is what is does but there is no stop at the end of the white zone - which is the main problem. Oddly enough there is a stop at the end of the yellow range, which makes less sense than having a stop at the end of the white range.

It is the same wiith the G1X III. It makes sense as quality of image drops significantly to "grainy" after the yellow range and the stop reminds people that : "Do you *really* want to go to the grainy zoom? Is the "good-quality-yellow-zone" digital zoom not enough?".

That's how I see it. lol

Well, yes for sure. But the more important drop in quality is between the optical zoom and the start of the digital zoom, so it is more important to have a stop there. That is the issue I have.

This might be a slightly different approach. For me, digital zoom is the second thing I disabled on any new camera (after all of the sounds), but I certainly understand that is only my personal preference. I have certainly used plenty of other cameras that behaved the way you are describing and never realized this one did not do the same.

Try setting the finction of the front control ring to zoom. With that setting, rotating the front ring controls the zoom all the way to 120 mm and stops there. To proceed further into the digital zoom range, you have to use the regular zoom control around the shotter button. If you get in the habit of zooming with the ring, you will absolutely not accidentally go into the digital zone.

Same here, I always disable

1) sound or mute it

2) digital zoom

3) the focus assist light or beam

Same here OP, I understand what you mean, I have a G3X and sometimes it stops, sometimes it doesn't and goes beyond into digital zoom. I have no idea why? Sometimes there is even a yellow line that tells you something is happening in the zoom range between optical and digital.

That sounds like a good idea.  Will have to give it a try.

Thanks!
