10mm Fisheye, the Best of the Pancake Lenses?
4

I was in Paris last week. Lovely weather. The 10mm delivered:

Florida in Paris

Saint-Eustache

The Bookshop Window in front of Notre-Dame

The Mall

Eiffel's Morning Walk

Le Grand Magasin

Inside the Dome

Synagogue des Tournelles

École Publique

Reaching for the Sky

Curves

Jardin Doré

Mini Liberty

(Some pictures were "semi-defished" using Fisheye-Hemi.)

Cheers!

Beautiful photos and a great lens. Also works well for video in 4k with the NX500 with crop.

Thank you for the kind words.

The 10mm fisheye is a remarkable lens considering its size and price. It's always part of my travel kit, usually with the 30mm as well as the 45mm on an MX Mini with the adapter. A very small and light kit delivering superb results.

Having two cameras with two different sensor formats provides an extended range for the lenses (the crop factor of the NX Mini, 2.7 for still pictures, is the same as the NX500 when used for video in 4K) :

  • the 10mm is a full frame fisheye (15mm equivalent) on the NX500 and a moderate wide (27mm equivalent) with an easily correctable bit of distortion on the NX Mini;
  • the 30mm is a perfect normal lens (45mm equivalent) on the NX500 and a portrait lens (81mm equivalent) on the NX Mini;
  • the 45mm (67.5mm equivalent) is a longish normal lens very useful for picking lanscape and architecture details on the NX500 and a telephoto (121.5mm equivalent) on the NX Mini.

Cheers!

You must have the elusive nx mini adapter! I was looking at an nx mini recently but never quite bit the bullet. Ideally I want the adapter and the 17mm and I know too well they're as rare as hen's teeth!

Yes, I was lucky to buy the adapter and the 17mm on this forum a few months ago. These are most useful to complement an NX Mini kit.

The adapter is the key to using lenses not only in NX mount but also in other mounts (as there are many third party adapters available for the legacy NX mount).

As for the 17mm, it's indeed a very good lens, even wide open. The OIS is the icing on an already excellent cake.

Cheers!

Awesome pictures. I also have the adapter as well as the 17mm. However, my Samyang 8mm doesn't make much sense on the NX Mini with the 9-27 and 9mm lenses giving me such great undistorted image quality.

However, on my NX500 the Samyang is amazing and sharp. Strangely enough it does not work well with my 20 MP cameras, the NX3000 and Galaxy NX. On those two there's a red color cast on the left side of the images. Not on the NX500 though.

Always eyed the 10mm, but the Samyang is wider and as sharp as they come. Though it does not have AF, but I only shoot landscapes and cityscapes with it, so it just stays on the infinity setting.

I agree about the wide angles for APS-C not making much sense on the 1" sensor of the NX Mini. But the 10mm fisheye is an exception. Because of the fisheye geometry, it has a bit wider field of view than the 9mm lens and is very sharp. I also like the fact that I can share it between both systems when traveling.

I don't have the 8mm Samyang but I don't think it's wider the the10mm fisheye. The diagonal field of view on the 10mm approaches 180 degrees.

Very interesting, I did not know this. So much I still have to learn about lenses and photography

"So even though both the 8 mm equiangular and 10 mm equidistant projections have the same 180 degree diagonal angle of view, the 8 mm equiangular lens has a greater horizontal and vertical angle of view. It doesn’t curve quite as much, but still pretty dramatic."

To me 8mm is just wider than 10, but here I'm proven wrong. I understand the level of Fisheye in the lens determines the diagonal angle and therefore the total width. Very interesting, thank you!
