What size filters would you get for an RF kit?

If you were buying filters (ND, circular polarizer, etc) for your RF lenses, what  size filter thread would you get? Especially considering future lens purchases?

Would seem to depend on your lens plans.  Most L series lenses except for the super teles are 77mm or 82mm.  Filter sizes for the non-L lenses are all over the place.

If you get one large size, usually you can find a reducer that will work with smaller size lenses.

This question is highly dependent on the way you use your equipment and budget. If you are really going to buy the high-end L lenses the budget should not be that big an issue.

You might get better advice if you laid out what you are likely to buy and use and how much use the various filters.

Polarizing filters are a bit of a special case. How much do you use a circular polarizer? Generally, I would not use a circular polarizer or variable neutral density filter (top-notch ones have less of an X problem) with a very wide-angle lens (aka 14/15 to 35mm).

You could certainly go with the 82mm and then get a step-down ring for filters you might use but then they don't work with lens hoods (you can get an extra lens cap that would fit). I would only go with the step-down ring approach for filters you would rarely use but might want to use occasionally.

Personally, I mostly use ND filters for the purpose of using a slow shutter speed and I use fixed ones to avoid problems with polarization effects. I thought I could use a step-down ring but then decided the inability to use the hoods with them was too big a drawback.

I started with 82mm ones but then I also bought the 77mm version since it makes life so

much easier not having to use a step ring and have problems with the sunshade. With my L Lenses filter cost is not a deciding factor.

I would get whatever filter or filters I want to fit the lens or lenses I'm using.  I don't use step-up filter adapters, and I'm not a fan of the square filter holder systems as that negates use of the lens hood.

Re: What size filters would you get for an RF kit?

I wouldn't bother with lens filters, except maybe for the CPL.

I'd get clip filters. Since behind the lens means they fit on everything. And none of the normal issues with lens filters, from getting stuck to flares to messing with step up rings.

I use a couple different ones behind my RF lenses and love it.

I use Kolari ones. Their ND are particularly free of color cast, and it's especially important to me because I shoot IR. Not everyone is as picky. Great filters.

But STC makes some, and I think Kase does now as well.

I've still got tons of lens filters, but I sure wish I'd started out with clips instead so I didn't have so many.

Re: What size filters would you get for an RF kit?

I buy filters to fit each lens that I have, Of my five RF lenses, only two take the same size anyway: 50mm and 16mm. I keep a UV filter on at all times to protect the lens. I consider this cheap insurance. I also use the circular polarizers, so find it economic to buy one of these kits.

Re: What size filters would you get for an RF kit?

I am not a professional but I decided on two sets.

58mm UV, 3 stop, and 6 stop fits the nifty 50mm f.8 and 35mm f1.8 with step up rings.

82mm UV, 3 stop and 6 stop for my 15-35mm f2.8 and later the 50mm f1.2 when funds allow

I am not doing video, so I opted not to buy a circular polarizer.

Re: What size filters would you get for an RF kit?

Surely it depends on the lenses you have, or intend to buy.  Many of the L lenses are 77mm, so that’s a good choice, and you can use a step down ring to adapt to 67mm for example.  If you are looking for slide-in 100mm filters (eg Lee or NISI neutral density), you buy one holder and the necessary adapter rings.
For protection filters, if you use them, you would buy one for each lens, in the correct size.

Your last comment is interesting.  CP is very useful for a lot of still photography.

I have the V5. I got it mainly due to the massive vignette I was getting on my EF-S10-22 years back when using a polariser on the Lee system. That mounted with a 105mm CPL on a front ring. I moved to Nisi mount and CPL and it was superb. The CPL works perfectly with nice clean corners on the 10-22 and also with FF at 16mm. Bit fiddly at times but all things I have seen are Improved With the V6 and now V7. I have a mixture of brands of filter including a couple of Lee grads, a 10 stop and a 6 stop from nisi and a starglow filter from someone who I forget right now. All work well on the V5. So I agree, great system to have in your bag. I would upgrade to V7 but there is zero wear on the V5 so will wait until it becomes loose or I loose it.

77mm because

I use protective filters on all my lenses - 14-35 + RF24-105L + 70-200Lf4. If something happens there is always a spare part in the bag (filter) and same pol filter is usable on all of them.

To me the 77mm size matters
