New to photography, new to Rebel 400D
1

Hello everyone.  After a lifetime of wanting to get into photography, I can finally afford it.  I bought a second hand Canon Rebel 400D off ebay, (it's working just fine so far) and it came with a Speedlite 420.  I haven't really started taking photos with a camera mounted flash yet (I mostly do landscapes and wildlife), but there was no manual for the speedlite. I managed to download one online, but it's complicated to read.  I'm just wondering does the Canon Rebel 400D have a wireless feature where I can have the flash go off when I take a picture with the camera, when it's NOT mounted to the camera? The Speedlite has the slave feature, but does the CAMERA have the ability?

Kovarr,

I'm not positive, but I think if your Speedlight has a slave feature, it should recognize when the flash goes off on your camera, and will trigger a flash too.

Here's a snippet from a website called, Improve Photography.

https://improvephotography.com/10126/what-is-slave-mode-on-a-flash/

"All the speedlight is doing is detecting a pop of light to trigger itself. Simply put, the slave mode on your flash will allow you to fire that particular flash when it senses the flash from another speedlight."

"TIP: If you plan on using your pop-up flash to trigger your speedlight in slave mode, you will have to compensate for the extra light coming from your camera. Use flash exposure compensation to turn down the flash power on your camera and help reduce the effect of that extra light."

Welcome! Well done to finally get started in photography.

As for the flash, I'm not sure about it being able to control other flashes.

The flash on my canon 600d can't. It's not mentioned in DPReview's review of the 400d, either. (see here )

Welcome on board.

I started with 400D once and it does not have any such option , nor wifi.

The 420 flash can act as a slave only.

Despite of it , 400D is an excellent camera , so the flash is.

The wired solution to shift the flash few decimeters off the shoe is very cheap, anyway.

Alernatively, you can buy a (I think IR ) master trigger for the hot shoe , not that cheap

Feel free to see my profile (esp. the flag) and post a private message if it looks familiar to you.:-)

All I can say is welcome first time poster. I don't know anything about the Canon 400D. I started with the Canon T2i (550D) camera when I switched over from my Olympus DSLR system. Have fun with your new toy.
