Stop me from buying an M6 Mk ii before Canon stops the M line

Hello

As I wrote in the title … “Stop me from buying an M6 Mk ii before Canon stops the M line”

initially looking at a compact as G1x or G5x with good IQ.. but IQ of the M6 II is much better .. so now considering the M6 ii instead..

I hear the M line might be stopped. Not necessarily an issue as this would be clearly a 2nd system for me (my 1st system being around the EF mount)

I hear an EOS R7 is soon to come but it will be bigger and more expensive than an M6 Mk ii

Regarding the G1x line, I was waiting for an elusive Mk iv but now stopped waiting

QUESTION: Is a brand new M6 Mk ii as a (slightly large) 2nd system / compact camera still a good buy in mid 2022 (even if the M line future is uncertain)?

thx in advance, kind regards

Gaul

Wait till you see prices and possibilities of the new camera. In a few months everyone will sell their old cameras and lenses at half price. You don't miss any opportunity don't buying now.

The Island of Obsolete Cameras is a pretty nice place!

They built them rather well, you see.

I'd say yeah; I bought one two weeks ago and am thrilled with it!

You could always wait a week and see what the Canon announcements look like?

In normal times, I’d wait for the replacement.. With high inflation, not so sure..
2

If I compare to the switch EF -> RF .. look at what happens to exiting EF camera bodies and lenses ..

Same for the G1x Mk iii .. it just stopped being available but there was no price drop ..

on EF bodies and lenses.. thought that some bargains would be everywhere on Canon site.. but no! Not at all

Canon continues to milk their bottom line up to the end .. even increasing prices on old models.. and suddenly discontinue them .. without having to discount these products

I cannot see Canon selling their M6 Mk ii at -50% any time soon..

- - my guess is that they will sell their stocks at list price and suddenly communicate the series is no more continued

- - my guess is that Canon will ask for more 💵 💵 for the proposed replacement…

- - so now is a good time to buy an M6 ii.. IMHO.. before it’s decommissioned

- - - - - - - -

EDIT:

Not bashing Canon at all

But typing on a smartphone and being maybe too straight to the point ..

I am 💯 % Canon actually and like their long-term strategy

My point is a fact (all manufacturers these days choose the low volume high margin approach) .. not an unfair critic .. I hope at least

thx

Sony, No Baloney !  That's what I'll have to do at some point when my M62 goes TU.

There's a reason behind the calculated timing of Canon's discontinuation of the M6ii and the upcoming R7 and R10.

Besides possible supply chain issues and the possibility that Canon may use the M6ii's 32.5 MP sensor in the R7, Canon may not have wanted to have an excellent mirrorless 32.5 MP body that can take EF lenses plus a few superb EF-M and third party lenses (Sigma trio) competing with APSC-R with similar sensors and IQ at a far lower price point.

Canon will likely not make an announcement ending the M line in general soon, the M50ii is still popular, so the value of M equipment may hold fairly steady.

If the rumored specs are accurate, and pricing of the R7 is along the lines being bandied about in the R forum ($2k - $3K), the M6ii still is an attractive less expensive alternative to the R7 but still has excellent specs and almost as fast mechanical frame rate. You can build a great system around the M6ii with some great inexpensive and sharp zooms (the EF-M zooms except most copies of the 15-45 kit zoom, the EF-S 55-250 IS STM) and fantastic inexpensive primes (EF-M 22 and 32, Sigma trio) compared to R. M6ii with 3 zooms and 2 primes will still be around half the price of a comparable R7 system.

The R10 could be priced more attractively, perhaps even under $1000 body only... but if it has only a 24 MP sensor it might feel like a step down for folks compared to the 32.5 MP M6ii and R lenses are still more expensive than M.

I made my choice and bought a 2nd M6ii refurb for $680 plus an EVF-DC-1 used for $125, plus an M200 refurb as a backup 3rd body. If i had to build an APSC R system to get equal or greater capability to what I currently have, it would cost me many thousands more than what I've paid for all my equipment and for what? Identical images. The M6ii already has a very full feature set for the enthusiast and is smaller and lighter, especially the EF-M lenses, than R equipment.

I believe demand for M will remain steady and used prices will also stay steady, and perhaps rise slightly (M6ii) due to less supply, even if/when the entire M line is discontinued.

It depends on what you need. If you really can be satisfied with what the current EOS M system provides, go for it. Otherwise, wait for Canon's RF-S release or go for Fuji or Sony.

Fuji and Sony have lower IQ .. in similar bodies of course .. amongst their APS-C offers

The M6 Mk ii has some truly magnificent IQ for its price / size

Unless there is an unbelievable deal, I wait for the announcement to see what Canon has on the roadmap, if any for M.

Camera itself is great, it still work for many years, but what you see is what you get, no more new lenses and bodies from Canon.

The rest of your gear

What is the rest of your photo gear?  You mentioned that your "1st system being around the EF mount".  Does that mean that you are still shooting with Canon DSLRs, or are you using RF mount mirrorless and adapting EF glass?  If you are still shooting with DSLRs, I see that as a much bigger long term issue.  DSLRs are dead and Canon is rapidly discontinuing EF lenses.

If you are retired and the M6 II would be your last camera purchase, then go for it and supplement your EF kit.  If you envision an extensive future of camera purchases, that EF gear needs to be rationalized, especially if it is EF DSLRs.  Are you shooting with a 5D IV?  The EOS R would give you the same image quality in a body that is barely bigger than a T8i Rebel.  The RP is even smaller and lighter than that Rebel.

The M6 II looks miniscule next to a DSLR, but the difference is much less dramatic compared to the something like the RP.  If your EF kit became smaller and lighter, would you still need something like the M6 II?

Re: Stop me from buying an M6 Mk ii before Canon stops the M line

i just bought a G6Xii because i want to have something really compact and silent with a wide angle zoom for interior shots in Europe this summer.  so with the 11-22 zoom i get exactly what i want.   but i have to say, that exterior EVF is laggy, slow and has long blackout and is in no way competitive to any other EVF anyone is selling today. so if you are looking for a reason to not buy a G6Xii and you are interested in the EVF, you have a good reason right there to wait

I am not going to try and stop you; I am going to tell you to go ahead and buy it.

I am considering the same cameras as you and having done my research, I am going to buy the M6 II.  It has better IQ and is still small enough to fit in my "man bag".

Even if Canon stops the M line, that does not bother me because I only need three or four lenses for that kit and Canon already has them.  I can use my EF lenses, but I do not plan on it.  I also like the 32 mpx for cropping and the 35mm that goes with it.
