About to receive G5X mk1, have G16
1

Succumbed to GAS and have a G5X on the way for a good price (they seem to command more in Australia than I would expect given age).
What attracted me to it is the EVF with 1 inch sensor plus a fast lens. I will be interested to see how I like it. Just reviewing comments on the DPR review and there were a lot a lot of negative comments but also a lot of positive ones (from users).
I have a G16 and the dinky OVF I find annoying, but on outings in bright sun it has been useful.
Mostly I shoot with a Nikon dSLR, the use case for these cameras is pack really light but have a camera with a viewfinder ...
I'll come back and post my impressions. Battery life is one thing that I will be watching.

I  use Nikons 95 percent of the time, but bought the 5X for it's compactness ,raw file inclusion  and control dials . I am very happy with it!
I looked at the Sony RX100 III but noticed so many with (eventually) broken battery doors and sticky pop-up viewfinders.  I won't have a camera without a viewfinder.
The 5X is more than I thought it could be ,better as I learned the menu system> The 20MP sensor is great and the zoom range is reasonable for a camera that will fit a coat pocket AND I can always have with me. Wide aperture is nice too.

So, the G5x arrived (after taking an age to go between post offices in Sydney ...)

Everything seems working well and just playing around I think I am getting used to the menus. Just updated the firmware which seems to have stopped the date/tune info disappearing every time the camera is turned off. (Can't see where to know what current firmware is and the pdf manual didn't help).

I haven't done any serious image quality comparisons yet, and I know just looking at what is on the rear LCD isn't diagnostic, but looks like more detail with G5x vs G16.

An aside, I also have an S120 and I have to say I love the front ring with the RING FUNC button as a way to access most settings ... Not quite the same on the G5x but the front ring still makes changing one shooting parameter easy (I don't have huge hands but I find the rear wheel with the 4 way controller very finicky).
I haven't used EVFs much but I think that is pretty good.
Now I have to decide whether to pension of the G16 :-o
Even though it is 1/1.7 inch sensor its form factor makes for excellent stowability.

liking the G5x. Nice to have a VF that shows all the shooting parameters.
one thing irritating me is the need to reset time after taking the battery out to charge it.
Googling indicates this means the internal date/time battery is depleted.
I guess you get what you pay for - bought this used by mail. Maybe the seller didn't even realise it was an issue. And these newer cameras don't have replaceable batteries - I see some older models did.
anyone else have this experience and find a work around? I

'm wondering if a new Lion battery for the camera or plugging it into the accessory charger (don't have one but presume I can get one) might help recharge the depleted internal battery.
