Shouldn't I be able to get closer?

The field of view here is about an inch. It was shot from a distance of about 10" using manual focus. The small black piece is about 1mm wide in the horizontal width.

Pieces of the balance from a 110 year-old Elgin pocket watch

1" is 25.4mm. The apsc at 1:1 would be 22.6mm, so you're close to 1:1. If you manually adjust to minimum focus and physically move closer to focus, you should reach true 1:1 if you aren't already.

Thanks BB!

Next question: What do I need to do to get more?

I just ordered a set of extension tubes, we'll see what they do...

Extension tubes seem like the most practical way to get an increase in image size.

If you used a macro lens with your micro 4/3, it would get 17.3mm in frame at 1:1.

Coincidentally, I have a capture of a similar watch part. Not a pocket watch, but similar nonetheless.

7mm watch part; About 2x magnification
