I left Nikon for Canon because of the following:

Canon RF 28-70mm F2.0 L USM

Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 L USM

My two favorite lenses, ever.

The R3 is a flagship camera, but it is imo wildly overpriced at $6500 vs the A1 or Z9...both of which perform as well with higher resolution. Imo the Canon lineup should be R6ii at $2500, R5ii at $3900, R3 at $5000 and R1 at $6500...Give or take...:-D

For my taste the R3 is just the right size / weight and ergonomics. In these points it beats the Z9 for my taste. I wonder why the Z9 has to be that big and heavy, even if it doesn't have a mechanical shutter.

At least here in Germany you can get the r3 for quite a bit less than the Z9, even though in this class I would assume this price difference not to be the deciding factor.

I also like the fact how compact and light the 7022RF lens is.

And I really like the 100-500. On the other side there seem to be some good priced lenses in the longer prime range from Nikon.

So it really depends what you want/need.

Re: Me too...

Buying any serious camera usually based on sensor size and lens preferences. How much one is prepared to pay rules the day. Fuji X-T2 got me hooked for a while. But now looking further afield at other cameras with classic designs and suitable lens combination.

For my photography Fuji cameras worth their weight in gold. But admit my Sony A7RIII captures the flavour and character of the light and detail without much effort. To some extent comparisons serve no purpose as the photographer fine tunes the camera settings.

Sony Canon and Nikon cameras used by professionals because they don't pay for their equipment; as business expense. But for mere mortals each decision more personal and not so predictable. Either ruled by your head or heart so the sensor size becomes secondary. Cameras like R3 require a more detached assessment not just concentrating on the sensor size; sometimes.

I have an r5 and the battery life is good enough for me. I also picked up two extra batteries, labelled them, a now cycle through them in order.

Normally I just cycle through the batteries and don’t think too much of it. I was out this weekend at an event and thought about this post and kept a bit more of an eye on it. The first battery was close to fully charged and the others were fully charged.

I took about 1100 photos and got through the first battery and a good 3/4 of the second between 0900 and 1330.

Not an entirely scientific evaluation but was pleasantly surprised.

hope this was of any help to someone.

My experience is similar to yours, going from the D500 to the R5. My journey started in the 1970s with an OM-1, then OM-2, next to a Canon AE2, then to a Nikon D50, D7000 and finally D500 which I expected to be "the last camera I would ever need" (assuming such ever actually exists). However, I moved back to Canon, and find the R5 out-performing the D500 in all respects.

Thank you for posting this. I love my D500 but I have the funds now to buy the R5 - and if I don't do it now, I likely never will...

I'm glad the review was of use to someone  (as well as dmmmd's comment)

You won't look back! (except for AWB, good luck with that...)

You can get 200 bucks discount on it now too (as far as I can recall that's a first...)

Re: from nikon to canon r5

I'm so surprised you didn't like the Z7ii.

A bit similar path for me, shoot with a dslr for many years, D7000/D600, but then with a Sony a7rii, really with the happy silent mode for concert photography but it felt like it was not that well built and can be buggy.

Then a while with a Fuji XT2, really nice feel but not strong weather sealing, one ribbon got water inside and now the shutter button is dead.

Sold everything, back to choosing a camera and a brand. Tried the a7IV, lot of improvement but the evf/back screen was Meh, then the Canon R5, I really hated the body, RF glasses are amazing but the body, didn't like it at all. Then I tried a Z6ii, I loved it right away, the high def evf, the feel of the body and z glasses are also amazing. I picked up a second hand Z6 and I love it! Battery life is really good, never failed once, I really like it! Obviously tastes are different for everybody but really surprised when I read your story

To me the R5 body wasn't too appealing to start either, I mean to say Nikons typically feel more "solid", but the tradeoffs were too great, Z6/7 AF is subpar, and the whole interface is just not there, after living with the R5 for a while I see nothing wrong with the body, everything is super intuitive and customizable, in the current state of things I'm quite happy I jumped ships, even though, had I been shooting solely for fun, a D850 would make me even happier (as would a Kodak Brownie to others...).
