Haven’t heard when Canon is sending my R6 kit to the store but I picked up the first lens for my RF kit today there.

Then

  • Memory cards
  • Tripod
  • Spare batteries
  • Camera bag
  • Flash
  • Lens cleaning kit

You will eventually buy above item 2-3 times before you get correct ones.

Make sure you get the hood for that lens.  I'd ditch the filter, but that's just me.

Get the JJC hood ...

Get the JJC hood.  Works great and good quality.  It is the button click type and fits close to the lens when reversed so it's good for packing purposes.

Totally agree. Hood without filter is optimal for most situations IMHO.

Is Canon the only lens company which don't provide hoods for their cheap lenses? It's a shame.

No. Nikon is now doing that with the cheaper lenses. Heck, the Nikon Z 28mm & 40mm don't come with a hood and both have plastic mounts.

Generally ambivalent on filters…

…but got this one because I read through this forum and saw several threads on the front element being close to the front of the lens and liable to damage. We’ll see if I put it on. I plan to get the hood but I’m seeing if there’s anything else I need to order.

The JJC hood fits nicely but it's a bit shiny inside especially for glancing light from just outside the field of view.  I think I improved the function of mine by grooving the inside using a junior hacksaw blade, but it doesn't look pretty now.

I bought a pack of self-adhesive flock paper very cheaply on Amazon - good for this sort of job and others too, anywhere that you want to control reflections.

I have this lens along with the JJC lens hood.  I love this lens on my R6.  I also recently got the 1.4x TC to go along with it and it's a great combo for wildlife.  You'll love it!

Arrived from Amazon today. The interior is rough so maybe they fixed the bright inside issue?

Re: ordered the JJC hood

Mine was textured but still quite glossy at a grazing angle of incidence. It was quite disturbing looking through it at a light bulb (don't try that with the Sun).  Modellers' matt varnish didn't help.  Steve's suggestion of self-adhesive flocking is a good one if you can buy it in small enough quantities.

I personally have not experienced any reflection issues with my JJC hoods on my RF 100-400 or RF 800. If I do have problems I will try your suggestions, but so far I find the both work great for my needs.

Thanks for the suggestions.
