18-55mm + MCEX-11 Macro Adapter - Whoa!
3

I was bored and decided to try Fujifilm's macro adapter with my 18-55mm. I think I've tried it with every other lens I own, just out of curiosity, but for some reason this one never crossed my mind.

To my surprise, at 18mm you can almost touch the subject with the front lens element. This is not unlike the minimum focus distance of the Tamron 18-300. At 55mm, it's only a couple of inches away. I was manually focusing, and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't focus until I moved in this close.

I believe if you set the lens to around 35mm you can get a little bit of distance from the subject.

Yes, I get better separation at the longer focal lengths.

Just out of curiosity, I took this shot to estimate the magnification at 18mm. It's only about 0.7x if my thinking is correct. Not scientific, but fun.

At 18mm. The front of the magnetic filter/cap ring is touching the ruler, which leaves the front element only a few mm from touching.

Hi Randy

I have the mcex-16 which I think has a larger magnification.

The Fuji chart says 0.69 for the wide end with the ex11 for the 18-55 (if I read it correctly).

https://fujifilm-x.com/en-au/products/accessories/mcex-16/

The above link has the chart for both extension tubes (if you don't already have it) in PDF form of you scroll down the page a little.

Cheers Paul

Thanks, Paul! Good stuff. I wasn’t too far off! I’ll keep this PDF for reference.

I have an old Olympus 50mm 1.8 that I shoot with an adapter and the extension tube sometimes. It makes great macros with some unique characteristics. So many gizmos, so little time!

A version of that information with some additional computed values is available at PhotonsToPhotos, see Fujifilm MCEX-11 and MCEX-16 on XF and XC Lenses
