Canon Refurb M200 - on sale

Canon M200 has been on sale at Canon refurbished web site for at least a few days at $350 - includes an EF-M 15-45mm f3.5-6.3 IS STM lens and free shipping. Both black and white sets appear to be in stock refurbished.

https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/refurbished-eos-m200-ef-m-15-45mm-kit-black

This appears to be a great deal, lower than used on eBay or anywhere else, and it includes 1-year Canon warranty.

Can anyone share their experience with the M200?

It appears to be basically an M50 Mark ii missing the EVF, hot shoe, external mic jack for video, and has fewer controls. Functionality and AF seems very close to the M50ii feature set although you have to access the exposure modes and many settings through the touch screen instead of physical buttons.

M100/M200 lack the ability to shoot bracketed exposures.

I think the differences may go a little further, especially in relation to buffer size and burst rate. But that doesn't matter for a lot of applications and you will still get the same image quality, just in a smaller package.

I actually just got back from a car show where I only brought my M10 with the 22mm and a marumi polarizer. My M50 and other lenses stayed at home. There is certainly something to be said for the low weight and size of the smaller M bodies, especially for landscape work or situations where you will be walking around a bunch.

At that price it’s tempting just on principle!

I like the M100/200 - I use them very differently to other cameras, with a wrist strap and more like a phone cam, with usually either the 22mm f2 or the 28mm f3.5 Macro, and get up close and personal to whatever the subject is, using aperture priority. They make me work in a different way to other cameras, and I like that. And also I really don't miss any spec differences as a result.
Would I want one as my only camera? No. But for the sort of thing I use them for, they're great - and M200 AF is excellent, too.

Exactly... I did bite on this deal, for a few reasons:

- 1.6x cropped 4k video is optimal for planetary astro stacking - even with it I'll still need the Kenko 1.5x TC on nights with good 'seeing' on my f15 telescope

- to play the EF-M 15-45 copy 'lottery' again.... 4th time's a charm? Hoping to get a copy as good as RLight's

- Need a third body good for tripod-mounted video for shooting trains

I'd like to use 2 cameras shooting video on tripods of trains (m6ii and M200), plus a 3rd hand-held (m6ii) for high-quality stills. The M200 would work great with Roki 8mm or 12mm lens for 4k video. No need for external mic as I can pull sound from the M6ii.

First world problems!

Example of how I shoot trains with 2 M bodies:

Wrist strap is handy with a light package. I actually handle my M10 more like a TLR with a top-down viewfinder on a shoulder strap. I prefer the lower vantage and it can also handle longer lenses that way as well.

Nice !

They have been making that lens for years since I last bought one. Maybe they have worked out the QC problems.

I keep thinking about picking one of these up to use with my 22mm as a carry-around, almost pocketable camera to keep with me while I am out and about. I just don't know if it is that much smaller than my M6II to warrant the extra expense. I can't get much from the online camera size comparator, it would be easier for me if I could handle one first. The refurb price is good, but I really overspent lately on astronomy gear, so I need to be pretty frugal for a while, but the gas is strong for this one.

I understand completely. Sometimes we 'find' reasons we need more gear... i am definitely guilty of that!

I find it easier to justify if the buying price is less than the price I can re-sell on eBay, and the refurbs do fit that bill. I've been able to find a lot of good deals on vintage stuff on Craigs list.... I try the lenses for a while, keep the very best and resell the others on eBay and make a small amount of money.

Experimenting with equipment is a hobby too and does teach you a lot!

The M200 is a good deal as it includes the kit 15-45 lens which if you sell on eBay takes the 'body only' price down even more.  I've tried 3 copies of that kit lens. I like the size and focal length range but none of the copies I've had have been good in the corners. I'll settle for one that's fairly sharp in the corners by f5 like my 18-150, but so far, no go...  I should know tomorrow when it arrives.

I got the M200 and kit lens yesterday. I've had some time to get to know it, and took it out on a shoot with my 2 M6iis last night to downtown Tampa to shoot a train 'street running'.

First off I'll say I did not 'win' the 'kit lens' lottery... the copy of the 15-45 that I got was the worst of the 4 I've now owned. This one not only had corners softer and more 'smeared out' than the others, but the whole leftmost 10% edge of the frame is unsharp even stopped down to f5.6. I plan to contact warranty service and get it replaced... I'll play the lottery again. I can accept the 'usual quality' mediocre copy with slightly soft corners but this one has a pronounced de-centering visible in video at any aperture and should not have passed quality control.

As for the body --- I have to say I was expecting a 'cheap plastic build' from the reviews but my impression of it is better than I was expecting --- it feels dense and solid even though it's lighter than the other M bodies.

Even though it has no front 'grip,' the edge sticking out the back for your thumb to grab onto is enough to get a good grip and I didn't really have issues or find it a problem. The texture of the front and the top black trim is rough and textured so that even with no real front grip, I found I could grip the camera well enough. Interestingly, I'd have to comment here than the M50ii actually felt more 'plasticky' and I had the impression of a slightly cheaper build to the M50ii than with the M200.

The placement and operation of the (few) controls feels quite natural, as you expect from a Canon. The balance of the body is good and is fine even with a bigger lens like the EF-S 55-250 IS STM with a 1.5 TC and adapter, or even the big heavy Rokinon 135mm f2. With those you are holding the lens with the left hand with the right hand operating the touch screen. The M200 body is so small and light it just sort of 'hangs off' a bigger lens.

That being said --- with a heavy lens like the Rokinon you would not be holding the camera with just your right hand shooting (although you can hold it with just your right hand momentarily), whereas you can shoot with the EF-M 18-150 and even the EF-S 55-250 holding the camera with just your right hand if you don't need to change settings on the touch screen. But I wouldn't shoot with the M6ii with the Rokinon just holding it with my right hand either --- you'd need a big DSLR for a heavier lens like that.

The height and depth of the M200 are slightly less than the M6ii, but the width of the body is where you really see a difference --- by 1/2 inch, which definitely makes the body feel smaller and fit into the camera bag better (especially without the EVF). I like the tilting flip screen as well, I prefer tilting over fully articulating for most shooting, and since it doesn't tilt down, it's more solid and feels more secure than the M6ii's tilt screen which is mounted to another tilting metal 'frame' that allows the whole rear screen to also tilt down.

An issue that I had with the original M6 body was that the body was more narrow than the M6 Mark ii, and when holding it especially with a longer lens like the EF-S 55-250 my palm would always press the lowermost right button on the back of the camera, which was annoying. They solved this in the M6ii by adding space to the right side of the camera so the button is not close to the edge. The M200 solves it by removing that button LOL so there is only one button below the control joystick and not 2, and I found I did not press any buttons by accident.

I've not really been a user of the 'touch screen controls' on the M cameras I've had, because I nearly always shoot using the finder and customize the controls to my taste.

At first with the M200 I had a moment of uncertainty when I was going through the menus and found that you basically can't customize almost ANY buttons on the M200... what Canon has chosen is what you get. I was especially wondering how I was going to magnify the screen to 5x and 10x for critical focusing with my manual focus lenses... a must have.

After a little while I figured out that you get the magnifying glass icon on the touchscreen, and pressing it toggles normal, 5x, and 10x modes. I never knew this.... sweet, and very fast!

More experimenting and I found that nearly ALL the visible settings on the touch screen can be touched to activate them, then you can dial the front dial to change them. So in manual mode you can actually set shutter, aperture, and ISO pretty quickly. This was all new to me, not being much of a touch screen user --- but I found it easy and intuitive.

The top 'mode' dial only has 3 settings: intelligent auto, normal stills 'shooting' mode, and video mode. I quickly came to like this simplicity --- the M6ii dial has so much on it that it actually takes a bit of searching and fumbling to quickly change between, say Manual and Video (so you can shoot 4k). So much so that I've missed shots with the M6ii when I've needed to switch between 'M' exposure stills and 4k video rapidly.

You access all the exposure modes like Av, Tv, M, P, and all the SCN portrait modes by touching the 'mode icon' in the upper left of the screen from the 'standard' stills setting, then choose the one you want. This is also quick and intuitive.

Although I love the M6ii's C1 and C2 modes, I knew I wasn't going to get them.... but already I found the simplicity of the M200 not to obtrusive, and perhaps even to be an advantage in some ways. It doesn't really feel like an entry-level camera to me, since I know that it has much of what the M50ii and M6ii has.

I owned the M50ii for a couple months, and did like it --- but it was quite similar to the M6ii in operation --- except it wasn't! Being so similar, the slight differences would throw me when using the M50ii in mixed shooting with the m6ii. The biggest issue being the 'dial' at the rear wasn't a dial but was 4 buttons.... I use the dial a LOT on the M6ii when looking through the EVF.

Since the m200 forces me to use the screen to change settings, I'm not trying to use the rear 'dial' and so this camera is 'different enough' from the M6ii so that I find I'm not confusing the control sets of both cameras in mixed use. Does that make sense?

In fact I've discovered that it's so easy to change things from the touch screen instead of the menus that this experience will probably change the way I use the M6ii...

The images I'm getting out of the M200 are great --- identical to the images I was getting from the M50ii. I can't say anything for the AF system, I haven't really done any testing on it, but in the shooting I've done so far I haven't had any AF issues.

Thanx for coming back on this Larry!

Sorry to hear that the lens lottery again was not won.
I bought 2 used M100 at very low cost because of their small size and little weight. I use the 11-22mm on one and a prime on the other one in order to avoid lens changes, keeping the allrounder 18-150mm as my main lens on a M6 MK1.
The M100 is lacking the eye AF, but still not far behind M200 and a very good companion for my M6, all digic 7, so the IQ is basically the same.
Yes I agree that the depth of the M100/200 is significantly less, so they stow away easier.

One of the M100 bodies came with a 15-45mm but I ve not tested it, because I send my M-system to a resting period in favor of a 1 body, 1 lens option.
I will have 2 trips upcoming by plane until this summer where I will only use a Sony RX10 IV, but the 3rd trip in autumn will be by car so, I may take along the M-system in parallel.

Enjoy playing around with your new tool...

M6ii body still on sale though, a good deal at $680.

May be best chance to get an M6ii body cheap with warranty.  No telling what'll happen as it seems the M6ii may be discontinued already as the R7 rumors seem to be solidifying with it possibly using the M6ii's 32 MP APS-C sensor.

Great! Hope you get a good 15-45 kit lens.

I sent the lens only back to Canon yesterday under the warranty service as it's decentered with a soft left edge even at f5.6. Playing the lottery again... They will likely just replace it.

Great! Hope you get a good 15-45 kit lens.

I sent the lens only back to Canon yesterday under the warranty service as it's decentered with a soft left edge even at f5.6. Playing the lottery again... They will likely just replace it.

I got my replacement EF-M 15-45mm kit lens yesterday, and took it on a long walk last night to put it through its paces on the M200. This is the fifth copy of this lens for me (all the others sold on eBay, some with a body).

Although this copy is not perfect, it's the best copy I have owned so far. it is very slightly de-centered, the left 15% of the frame starts to 'blur out' progressively worse towards the edge of the frame at 15mm. It's not horrible and as you zoom it gets better, almost going away by 24mm or so. There's also a slight lack of sharpness in the right side's edge and corner at 15mm wide open, but that is normal for this grade of lens and it's better than the left side.

It's about the same level of 'minor' de-centering I've seen on many EF-S and EF-M kit zooms, including the EF-S 10-18mm IS STM, EF-S 18-135mm IS STM, and EF-M 18-150mm IS STM. The only zooms I have which are perfect is the EF-M 11-22mm IS STM and the EF-S 55-250 IS STM.

Oddly, at 15mm, stopping down from f3.5 to f5.6 does not really improve the image. The right side improves a little, but the left edge and upper left corner seem to degrade. I may get 'as good' results at 15mm wide open as stopped down, this is a new one on me and perhaps a welcome change? See results below. I shot many locations and this happened in all the sets, it wasn't a one-off.

Other than that, the rendering across the frame is not bad with good micro-contrast at all focal lengths, surprisingly even at the maximum aperture at all focal lengths.

Here are some samples at full M200 24 MP resolution:

15mm, f3.5

15mm, f5.6

24mm f4.5

45mm f6.3

Great results with the M200, even with the kit 15-45mm lens
5

I've put the M200 through its paces now, taking it out on many shoots.

I have to say I'm quite impressed with this tiny camera. For most shots the results aren't much different than my M6ii results. I have a little less latitude with cropping and perspective correction with the 24 MP sensor, but that's to be expected.

The second copy of the kit lens I got is actually fairly good, The first was badly decentered and I sent it in under warranty service to be replaced. It's very sharp across most of the frame wide open, except the leftmost 10% or so of the frame is a little soft, but this can be mostly corrected in DxO PL5 with some additional 'Edge'-only unsharp mask sharpening.

Here are some examples with the m200 with the kit lens at 15mm. Some of them have had some DxO Viewpoint perspective correction.

M200, EF-M 15-45 at 15mm, f7.1, ISO 100, 1/320s

M200, EF-M 15-45 at 15mm, f3.5, ISO 640, i/60s

M200, EF-M 15-45 at 15mm, f4, ISO 6400, 1/60s

One of the reasons I got the m200 was for the 4k cropped video --- so I could do extreme close-up planetary photography through a telescope.

It does not disappoint! I took several minutes of video of the planet Jupiter with a Meade ETX-125 1900mm focal length f15 telescope, using the m200 at prime focus with a Meade camera adapter, Canon EF T-ring, Canon EF to EOS M adapter, Kenko 1.5x SHQ teleconverter stacked with a Kiron 2x MC7 teleconverter, using the 4k cropped 24 fps cropped video.

I then ran the video through PIPP pre-processor software to convert to 'steady' cropped AVI video format, AutoStakkert to choose the highest quality 400 frames and stack them, and Registax software to deconvolute the image back to a sharp image using its wavelets. Final processing in DxO PL5. The result is approximately 900x magnification, shooting and cropping through a 5,700mm focal length f45 telescope configuration!

The image shows Jupiter's largest moon Ganymede to the left, and Ganymede's shadow cast on the planet. Jupiter was low in the East so the Earth's atmosphere caused some chromatic aberration, one side of the planet is bluish and one reddish.

Jupiter with Meade ETX-125, prime focus, Canon M200 at prime focus with Kenko 1.5x SHQ TC, Kiron 2x MC7 TC, 4k cropped video, best 400 frames stacked and processed

I bit on the first time this deal appeared and am really enjoying this little camera, even as an avid M6 Mark II user.   This is a great price on this camera kit especially with free shipping.
