R5 + Grip + RF100-500 & BlackRapid Sport

I wonder if anyone uses the BlackRapid strap with the combo I mentioned?

Before adding the grip I used a PeakDesign wrist strap which I absolutely love and it allowed me to hold the camera + lens for hours while hiking/walking. It does not work (for me) with the grip installed.

I also have a PeakDesign strap and wondered if people preferred the BlackRapid over it.

Curious about what people's experiences have been and also did you attach the strap to the camera or the foot of the RF100-500?

I use the same set up -- R5 + Grip + RF100-500 (with 1.4x TC) -- with both BlackRapid Sports Breathe Strap and Peak Design Slide Strap, except both straps are modified with QD ends.

Both straps are comfortable. With the BlackRapid, I feel more secure than with the Peak Design. With the Peak Design, however, I can slide the strap shorter or longer much easier. The only thing that I do not like about the Peak Design's is those thin strings between the quick release buttons and the strap. For light gear, I'd feel more confident; but for our set up, I'm always wondering about the load tolerance of those thin strings.

I once dropped my gear due to a defective QD, so I now use a safety tether along with the main strap, one QD to the R5 L-bracket and one QD to the lens plate. An added benefit to this set up is that my gear doesn't swing around my waist as much and is more balanced.

Here's the QD modification with BlackRapid strap:

I've used the Black Rapid strap on my R5 + grip + RF 100-500 (as well as my EF 100-400II when I used to own it) with absolutely no issues for hours of photography and tens of thousands of images. I connect the strap to the QR plate on my lens foot -- and would not do it any other way.  It puts the camera grip right at hand for quick photography.  I For the first many days, I also used a safety tether clipped to the camera body, but never having had any issues with the camera and lens coming apart (which I did have happen with my 1D mark IV and the 100-400), I don't do this as often.

As an aside, I have also used the Peak Design strap and the OpTech sling systems with the camera/grip/lens combination.  All of the three sling systems work well; each has minor drawbacks; but overall I prefer the Black Rapid system when I am shooting with camera/grip/RF 100-500 with and without the 1.4x.

I have the R6, and rented that lens.  While I don't have the grip, I did attach my BR strap to the foot of the lens.  With a lens that big, I don't feel comfortable attaching to the camera.

My setup includes a Magpul QD connector on the BlackRapid Sport (latest version now includes Magpul QD) along with a RRS camera plate and Hejnar lens foot .  The cam body has a Peak Design Clutch hand strap and an OpTech Finger Cuff instead of a tether.  The OpTech cuff can easily be replaced with another tether style as warranted.

Can you say what security tether are you using?

It's this one by OpTech, minus the plastic end part of the first item. I cut it off in order to use it as a safety tether.

Re: R5 + Grip + RF100-500 & BlackRapid Sport

I started using a BlackRapid Sport X in the summer of '21. I few months after Covid I had vertigo on and off. If I put something around my neck like a camera strap it could get really bad. I bought a BR strap and it works great. I use it often with my 100-500. I don't have the grip. I have tried grips on and off for 20 years with my various Canon DSLRs and never liked them, I am pretty big several inches over 6 feet with big hands and the grips just felt too big for me. I also never used a wrist strap, My camera would be in the shop every month. I have a tendency to drop stuff. My only regret is that I never tried the BR strap earlier. I really like the balance when hiking and I want my camera available and not in my backpack.

Thanks!

And do you have it attached to only one side of the PD strap?
