my image making is better my cameras are not

Digitally I am still using a GX7 with a brand new Pen F sitting in a unopened box my greatest joy has been the changes is post processing tools.

I guess my GAS has been post processing software not the camera

Just a thought maybe a new lens would not go astray a small 32mm (64 in FF world)

Unfortunately for me, my GAS covers software AND hardware.

But I'm the same as you in that I really, really love having photos to process.  It's incredibly enjoyable to have a pile of raw photos waiting for me to play with after a day's outing for a trip to another city or country.  DxO's DeepPrime has made a significant improvement in my high ISO shooting, more so than upgrading a camera body (within micro four thirds) in the past many years.

I also like having my own raw presets or trying third party presets without having them tied to a particular brand or model of camera.

Good images. One of the true benefits of digital is the fact that the media for recording it is cheap. Unlike the days of film when you just pressed buttons and hoped for the best - invariably disappointed in the results and usually so disconnected from the actual capture to know what was necessary to do better. Not only that but film and processing was quite expensive.

Digital allows us to practice virtually at no further cost than buying the storage card in the camera.  I practice a lot and get some pretty awful images of uninteresting subjects.  Which I can repeat until I see what I need to adjust in real time.  Then delete all after I have figured out some improvement in my ability.

This is worth a whole lot more than the latest and greatest bodies or lenses to go with them.

I still shoot 50:50 digital and film, I have a brand new Contax T3 film camera great to use better that my now defunct T2.

With post processing the camera and lens still dominate as they are first port of call so whatever is produced gets played within those parameters

Not particularly interested in the deep primes and sharpening software. After all if you want sharp images use a sharp lens and if the camera /lens/sensor combination cannot cope with the light move and and shoot otherwise.

There is no value in producing a small rangefinder style of camera, which is why manufacturers now focus on the monied hobbyist and professional market where the Z9,omd-1etc rule the roost

For some users of the small ‘graveyard cameras” the answer lies in post processing, others just just head off with their smartphones with its inbuilt processing.

I haven't reached that level of pessimism yet.  Sony A7C, Fuji X-E4 and Panasonic GX9 give me hope.  Not to mention the Fuji X100V which I'm really enjoying (alongside my GX9).

the fuji x100v is fixed lens

the GX9 is already 4 years old and nothing on the horizon and didn’t bring much to the party over the GX7

Sony A7C is FF and the EX-4 one has to buy new lenses.

Ah, I didn't realize you were referring solely to m43 cameras.

I'm going to give Panasonic another year to come up with a GX9 replacement.  Considering the slowing camera sales and the pandemic, it doesn't surprise me that they haven't come out with a replacement yet.

I like the wide DOF that mft offers with ease, with portraits f1.7 is enough as long as one is selective with the background, and then there are the post processing tools to play with.

I may have to open my Pen F but the articulated screen is a bother, maybe I will sell it as brand new unopened. It is a legitimate purchase all be it via a full house in a card game

That 16:9 VF on the GX9 was the deal breaker for me plus I prefer to spend my money on travel even if it is only from village to village

I know what you mean. When the Pen F was first announced I played with it and decided I could not cope with a screen resting on my wrist. However, a little while after this, it was on offer for a good price with a free lens, so I bought my first one. I now would not buy a camera without an articulated screen.

The camera held at waist height with the screen pulled down for framing.

Yes, I also find the wide DoF of MFT to be more of a benefit than a disadvantage.

Agree.  It's one of the reasons why I never found it appealing as a street photography tool.

The 16:9 ratio is unfortunate.  If they came out with a GX9 successor, I'd be fine if the used the same type of EVF but just made it a bit taller so they could give it a native 4:3 ratio.
