Do you have playback initial delay on GH5 II with fast SD Cards?

Recently got new GH5M2, updated firmware to Ver.1.1 and started using with my old 32GB Transcend SD Cards SDHC UHS-I Ultimate Class 10 U1 with no problems.

Today decided to make small upgrade and bought two 128GB SanDisk SD Cards Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I U3 V30.

Inserted both 128GB cards and noticed odd thing: after pressing playback button you have to wait about 2 seconds before you see the image from SD card. Annoying. With Transcend old cards it works without noticable delay - instant image on LCD.

All the cards are formatted in camera body. Old 32GB cards have many photos and videos and start playback with no delay. New 128GB cards have just couple of images.

Initially, I suspected it is not GH5 or SanDisk but perhasp 128GB card size and SDXC. But after checking in GH4 body found that 128GB card works there without initial delay - perfectly fast. Tried to format in GH4 body. Same result: no delay in GH4 and initial delay about 2 seconds in GH5M2 if 2 SD cards inserted. If just 1 SD card inserted, initial delay is about 1 second.

32GB card has FAT32 partition and 128GB card has to have exFAT partition. Perhaps the issue is about GH5M2 and exFAT partition.

Did anybody face same issue with GH5M2 or another camera? May it be solved somehow, example use other brand SD card? Is the only solution to use 32GB FAT32 cards?

Hi all and thanks for your responses,

Here is how the story ended for me at least for now.

As I wrote last time, I found a place to try UHS II card. There was only Sony card SF-M128T what is SDXC UHS-II U3 V60 128GB. When I tried it, it played back not as instantly as 32GB card but with really small delay, maybe 0.2 seconds. I decided to buy 2 such cards. Now, when 2 such cards inserted, playback delay is maybe half a second. This is acceptable to me but not perfect.

I also tried how this Sony card works in GH4 body. There it works same way - instant playback as for all other cards I have.

If Panasonic make firmware fix, it will be a really good update. Maybe I'll find time to report them, else nothing happens

No

Make sure you never ever delete a file from your card and always format it in camera

Thanks, I formatted many times and even with the first single photo it delays. Which SD card you use in GH5 II ?

Inside at present I have kingston

Don't get me wrong it is not instant but I have experienced much longer. I don't have any card less than 64GB

It bothers me more the delay in writing than the playback but the GH5M2 is ok the GH6 instead is really slow at starting

Not a owner of your camera.

Back to a few years ago on early releasing of G9, there had similar reports. Eventually found using an USH -II card can address the problem. At that time I read that Lexar cards also had problem too.

Not sure would this also applies to GH5 mk-II.

To format a card in camera or not is more for a quick erase of data on card, surely the right file system and a peace of mind only. Most modern day cameras including Panny do not need to do it as long as your card has been in a compatible format, FAT instead of NTFS.

Thanks Albert,

I would pehaps consider an option to buy USH-II cards if I knew for sure the issue would be solved. Otherwise, it is quite expensive experiment. What is really odd is that if I move SD card from GH5 to GH4, it shows images instantly, even RAW-only files, even GH4 is 16MP and GH5 is 20MP.

I'm pretty sure that writing performance USH-I U3 V30 is enough for me. I will not shoot long RAW series or record video in 400 Mbps. I tried it even with my old USH-I U1 cards and havent faced any errors while recording. Red card icon becomes transparent in less than second after recoding stops. I guess it means that everything from buffer memory is stored.

I've been using the Lexar 128gb (1667x 250MB/s) uhs-ii cards ,two in my G9, one 64gb in my gx80, all have been great with no problems.

Theyre cheap cards in the scheme of things and plenty fast (v60) make sure you dont need more for features you use though.

If you use amazon try to buy from a camera store that has an amazon shop, helps to avoid fake cards.

I have two Sony G 128G UHS-II cards in my G9, and I do not ever see this delay.

I hope that helps. The G cards are old, Sony doesn't make them anymore. They make a newer very fast card.

Sony G is now ‘Tough-G’. Same speed specs. I have both. Can’t tell difference on G9. Have been very happy with them and ability to clear buffer fast. I have found the G9 has a very slight delay to start playback, with any card I think….not a problem.

V30 cards are really dated. In addition of recording slow they read slow when you transfer to your computer. Obviously to keep all aligned you need a nice ancient computer with USB 2.0 so that all balances out!

Thanks to all your answers! Will post back here when I find a solution.

I had a small hope that I would get used to this playback delay but I cannot. It is very inconvenient. If these cards won't work fast after some firmware update or somehow, I'll throw them away or give to someone after I find and buy a better set. Now I inserted 9 years old 32GB cards and they work perfectly - no delays. 4K 100 Mbps works without problems.

What? The last time (summer 2021) this was discussed considering G9, the conclusion was that "G9 has this delay and there's nothing you can do about it".

I am using similar Lexar 128GB (1667x 250MB/s) UHS-II cards and I have to wait about 2 seconds every time I go into the playback mode. Now several people are telling that this is not the case, what the heck?

I have never seen this kind of a delay on any of my previous LUMIX cameras.

Yep no delay, straight in.

Your firmware is current?

My GX80 is the same no delay.

I remember people having that issue at one point, I thought it had been resolved with firmware, could be wrong though.

Firmware is current, last updated yesterday. I think I have tried different cards.

No delay on G1, GF1, GH1, GH2, G3, G7, GM1, GM5, G80. Delay on G9.

Different configuration of the dual-SD slots, perhaps?

I made sure to buy my SD cards on amazon, from a known uk camera shop, amazon etc are flooded with knock off cards.

that crossed my mind too, 'backup rec' is what i use 100% of the time, I did just try another mode with no issues.

about 1 sec delay to review on G9. (irritating)

Doesn't seem to matter which card, type II; Sandisk, Sony, Toshiba

(come to think of it - it might have been closer ot 2s on type I)

I do delete pix on cam, but always format card after downloading

So even UHS-II cards may have this delay? This issue appears to be firmware issue and I will contact Panasonic but I doubt they will fix it if nobody else complains. I just tried old GH3 and even there this 128GB card does not have playback delay. Will try finding any UHS-II card to check how it works in GH5M2

In my case old 32GB card works perfectly without any delay in GH5. One card or two inserted - same way instant playback. 32GB has FAT32 partition. Perhaps capacity matters. If you have 64GB or more, you have to have there exFAT partition. Anyway, if 128GB can work perfectly fast on GH4, it should be same way in other newer cameras.
