Fuji XS10 or XH1?

I am planning for a trip to the lake district and the farne islands. My first camera is a fuji xT3 but now the shutterspeed dial is not working correctly (if i change the shutterspeed, the metering mode dial changes as well...)

I am planning to buy a back up camera and have to decide between a new XS10 or a used XH1 as I want to have IBIS

I shoot mostly with 16-55 for landscape, 50-140 for portraits and 100-400 for birds and wildflife

What would you recommend? Buy a used XH1? or new XS10. My budget is 1000 euro max

Thanks for your response!

To accompany an X-T3 my vote definitely goes to the X-S10 - that was my setup until I changed the T3 for the 4.

Personally I think the smaller body compliments the larger X-T3 plus I found the the 3 to be a significantly better camera than the X-H1.
The other factor, which may not be important to you, is because the XT3 and XS10 have the same sensor and processor then you can expect identical results regardless of which one you use.

I know when I’m travelling or out and about I always grab the XS10, it’s just so portable. I would recommend looking at a grip for the XS10. I got a smallrig one which just adds a nice bit of heft and size to it for when it’s required - I have found myself using it quite often with the 50-140 that way.

No experience with the X-S10, so I'll leave comments and recommendations for that to others.  Of the three lenses you mentioned, I've owned two of them (16-55 and 100-400) for years and they remain my most frequently used lenses.  The X-H1 was, and is an excellent camera and has served me well from the day I purchased it (right after it was introduced).  It's a hefty piece of kit, and based on the many comments I've read here in the forum, it's certainly not for everyone.  I do find the balance and handling with the larger lenses you mentioned to be excellent and really not an issue for me since I use the camera with grip attached at all times and it's never felt unwieldy or uncomfortable.

I doubt that IQ will be much of an issue, but you really need to ensure that you'll be comfortable with the size and handling of the X-H1.  If you have a chance to handle one or even rent (hire) one for a period of time, I might recommend it.  Or, at the very least, thoroughly check it out in the shop first, if you have that opportunity, just to make sure that you're OK with the size, weight, and handling.  Otherwise, it's a great camera and there really is little in the way of issues that I might want to warn you about first.

Best of luck, regardless which direction you decide to go.

I don't think anyone can answer this for you. For example, I would always choose the X-S10 regardless of the lens used, whereas my wife (with a much smaller hands than I have) would always choose the X-H1.

I have an X-T2 and very recently an X-E4 and do not do any video. Being old as dirt, or pretty close to it, I found that there were times when I could not shoot handheld, requiring me to use my monopod or tripod with the X-T2. So I decided to get a Fuji with IBIS and like you came down to a choice of a used X-H1 or or an X-S10, preferably also used.

In the end, I decided on the X-H1for several reasons. The X-H1 and the X-T2 share the same 24mp sensor and processor so the results using the same lens would be no different. They both share the same big bright EVF and same tilting LCD, along with all of the major analog controls, except for the loss of the exposure compensation dial on the X-H1, which I never use anyway and find an annoyance. Except for the items relating to IBIS and the small secondary information LCD on the top deck of the X-H1, the menus are identical. So almost zero learning curve and of course, the cost difference. Except for the newer 26mp sensor and processor, there is almost no difference between my X-T2 and your X-T3, so the X-T3/X-H1 experience would be very similar, while the X-S10 is a departure from Fuji's traditional analog control system.

The IBIS on the X-H1 solved my handheld problem, but the X-H1 feels huge and a lot heavier than my X-T2 and in the end I decided it was too big for me and sold it after about six weeks. Now that I have the absolute minimalist X-E4, I keep thinking that an X-S10 might be an interesting upgrade from the X-T2. The only thing holding me back is the two things I hate are articulating LCDs and declicked aperture rings and besides the PASM dial, Fuji stuck an articulating LCD on the X-S10.

You might want to try the X-H1. I would think it would have better balance with bigger lenses. My 50-140 works great on the X-H1

Though I think the X-S10 is a fantastic camera, and I've never used the X-H1, I think the X-H1 is going to be a better fit for those lenses in terms of size and weight. I generally use smaller and lighter zooms and primes on the X-S10, because it's perfect for them, and I'm sure you could use your lenses on it, I just feel the X-H1 will be a more balanced outfit.

As others have said, the X-S10 is the superior camera when compared to X-H1. But I agree with others when they say that the X-H1 will probably balance better with your lenses.

I have the X-S10, X-H1, X-T3 & X-T4 and I mainly use the X-S10 as a second body to the X-T3 or X-T4 but I usually use it with the smaller lenses (10-24, 16-80 or 70-300).

It’s fine with the bigger lenses but then I’m somewhat insensitive to the weight/balance issues that people complain about.

Your best bet would be to get your hands on both to see which one suits you best.

The advantage of the X-H1 is that it’s a few hundred cheaper than than the X-S10 and it is still a fine camera.

I would opt for the X-S10, it has superior AF to the X-H1 and if you want to try photographing the birds in flight you will appreciate this. IBIS is also very useful when you are on the boat around the Farne Islands photographing the cliff face bird habitats.
WIth your X-T3 issues though, a short term solution would be to assign the shutter speed control to one of the command dials and make adjustments that way? Also, balance often comes up with the 100-400mm and choice of camera / use of grip. Yes it does balance better but I do think this is often a familiarity concept and how we feel holding the camera. It's surprising how quickly we can re-familiarise oursleves when we change gear and modify our technique accordingly. Yes, balance with a large lens is important but I do think at times we don't give ourselves enough credit at working with what we have.
Enjoy your trip to the Farne Islands, it is my 'local patch' and I've already been out there a couple of weeks back. A good friend of mine owns the Serenity Boat Company and he has excellent boats, catamarans with ther twin-hulls and 360 degree deck access make for steady and versatile (as you can get on a boat!) photography platforms.

X-S10 without any hesitation. I love the X-H1 and it is probably the best built FujiFilm camera I own (apart from the X100V!) but my back hates it. It is heavy. The big advantage of the X-H1 if you are going to the Lakes and the Farne Islands is its weather resistance.

The X-S10 is a fantastic camera and I use it with all my zoom lenses and have not noticed any handling problems but do tend to hold the lens more than the camera body. I have fitted the excellent SmallRig cage to the X-S10.

It may be worth considering that whilst the X-H1 remains a superb camera it is not future proof and the X-S10 will continue to receive updates as it is a current model.

I must admit that the X-S10 has really suprised me, it is a cracking bit of kit.

You will be using large lenses, so my first impression is are you using a tripod? The X-S10 is a small camera, so you may need to add a grip? Are you using those lenses on the X-T3 without a grip? The X-S10 with grip ends up about the size of the X-T3.

For me, given those lenses it would be the X-H1, but you do have to try before buying as it is weighty. Also I couldn't give up the X-H1's higher resolution EVF & better eyecup, it makes a huge difference. When I go back to my X-E3 it's quite the adjustment but the X-E3 has its own charms, the EVF and the poor eyecup and eye relief not being among them..

You may want to try 2 things:

- make sure that you do not grab the metering mode dial together with the shutterspeed dial. That happens to me once in a while, also on my X-H1 (same with the ISO / drive mode dials).

- read this thread and see if you have a case of sticky dials: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4295163

Good luck!

Thanks, I just read the messages related to problems with the dials! I used the dental floss and now the dial seems to work fine!

I still will buy a XS10 as a second body or the XH1 but this problem with the Xt3 seems solved

Thanks a lot!!!!!

The superior AF is a good argument!
