Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L Longitudinal CA

Hi,

Is this amount of longitudinal CA typical for the RF 24-70 on an R5? The exposure (first photo) was f/2.8, 1/1600,  IS0 100, 70mm, +0.3 EV, MFD. The second photo: MFD, f/4.5, 1/320, ISO 640, +0.3 EV.

Is the 24-105mm f/4L any better in similar conditions?

Thanks,

Martyn

Don't be dense; it's lens not 'lense'!

Unfortunetely it is normal with RF 24-70/2.8 but only towards the 70 mm end.

RF 24-105/4 has this abberation not that pronounced by also present at the very end. So at 70 mm the 24-105 might be significantly better than 24-70.

Virtually ALL lenses can be copy dependent regarding their flaws. I got lucky except for one lens of the 6 I own, having them virtually perfect and CA and LOCA free including a RF24-70 f2.8L copy. Only my first copy of a RF24-240 had those issues. The replacement is perfection. So you can't paint with a wide brush attacking such a lens. Guess you have one made on a Friday afternoon. LOL

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.

This is more down to a lens design and materials used for lens elements than to deviation between manufacturing shifts.

Thanks, I'm not attacking the 24-70 per se, just enquiring as to whether I have to stop down to f/5.6 or smaller just to avoid LOCA when shooting at MFD. I don't mind lateral CA as it's easily corrected.

Thanks, I'll try the 24-105 f/4L with flowers at 70mm. Maybe the 28-70 is a better option. Incidentally, the 100-500 is very useful for close up photography.

Sorry to tell ya I'm not the only one I've communicated with that has found their 24-70 copy free of what you claim in inherent. It's NOT.

Or may be you just do not meet it in your pictures because of the way you shoot. That is much more likely.

Aberrations are attributes of a light going through the glass. There are lense designs more prone to it (RF 24-70) based on the used elements and their chararacteristics and less prone to it (EF 70-200/2.8 II).

By design.
