Any PowerShot Zoom users here?

Just want to know, what do you use this for?

Why did you buy it?

Is it worth it?

Wouldn't a proper compact zoom camera or bridge camera be better?

Also is the battery replaceable?

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

IMHO - all is well with your Camera - what kind do you have?

Hi, I am referring to the model Canon PowerShot Zoom, a monocular camera from Canon.

Just wondering do any users here have it and do they find it useful?

Seems like an interesting device.

Depends on your needs. It's 100mm or 400mm (equiv) telephoto. No real zoom function, so you're stuck with only a telephoto camera. its tiny sensor is smaller than even most compact cameras and the image quality shows. It has almost no adjustments such as photo modes. Seems like something that should be priced at $150.

Wouldn't a proper compact zoom camera or bridge camera be better?

Absolutely. For example, the Canon Powershot ELPH 360 HS cost less and lets you zoom from 25-300mm (equiv.) so it's far more versatile as a general purpose camera. A bridge camera can zoom further but is larger.

Also is the battery replaceable?

Battery is fixed internal.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Re: Any PowerShot Zoom users here?

Thank you

Anyways I'm just curious as to who or why anyone would buy this?

The price seems too pricey compared to say buying a TZ95, SX740 or A1000.

But I'm curious to know what users who own this Canon camera think about it and practical uses for it.

Personally I think I would buy one if only it had a replaceable battery.

Also wondered the same when first released. Possibly those who only use a smartphone for camera? And did not know it does NOT have a "ZOOM" lens.

... The price seems too pricey compared to say buying a TZ95, SX740 or A1000.

Definitely overpriced for what it is, and the image IQ; overall FAR less practical than any Panasonic ZS/ TZ camera with EVF.

In case you have not seen, see DPR's "Canon PowerShot Zoom Overview" HERE, for general comments and sample images.

Did you try doing a online search?; e.g., "Canon Canon PowerShot Zoom review"

Seems like an interesting device. ...

If it's price was around US$100, or less.

As you previously posted for the price be better off with one of the pocketable travel cameras, or binoculars/ camera combo, or binoculars with smartphone adapter.

Cheers,
Jon

Yes, it is too expensive for what it is, but I bought one anyway.  I like to collect odd or unusual cameras, so that was part of it, but I also thought about possible uses for it before buynig it.

It is easily pocketable, and I'll bring it with me on photo walks/drives. See something far off and only have a wide angle on the camera?  Pull out the PS Zoom and take a look, and maybe grab a picture.  I also use it as one of my "always with me" cameras since it's easy to keep in a jacket pocket.  Picture quality is ok, about the same as other simple P&S cameras, so nothing to brag about.

Another thought, wonder if anyone would stop me from taking it into a concert/sporting event...

Same here, I think it's a waste of money but I still want it. I love to collect these oddities.

Thank you for your feedback!

Is it possible to get some sample images, those of the longer end like 400mm and 800mm?

Here are a couple, the second being digital zoom, the exif shows the same focal length:

400mm

800mm

Re: Any PowerShot Zoom users here?

The images are quite good. You even got a seagull flying and there's no motion blur. It looks like the autofocus is good for fast moving objects.

Re: Any PowerShot Zoom users here?

They're definitely P&S/small sensor quality, but they work and I do find the camera useful. I'm glad I bought it, just wish it had been $100 less.

Yes agreed, I think I will get one if on sale.

Current price doesn't make sense, you can get an sx740 for the price they are asking for the PowerShot Zoom.

Thank you for the images, I think they are acceptable.

I also don't really like the idea of non-replaceable batteries.

IMO a Panasonic ZS/ TZ would be a better option as they have EVF, and if wanting optimum IQ from a small 1/2.3" sensor can shoot JPG+RAW.

Yes most definitely. But this powershot zoom is also cool to have, it's just not the right price.

My reply was that a ZS/ TZ IMO a better option than the ".. sx740 ..." you posted.

Re: Any PowerShot Zoom users here?

I see, I think having any of the 4 (Nikon a1000, TZ95, HX99, SX740) isn't too bad.

Re: Any PowerShot Zoom users here?

I believe its focus was on birders. Not camera pros. Great idea, just need to have better than binocular view.

Re: Any PowerShot Zoom users here?

I do hope to get one but not at current prices. I've seen the ads and they also showcase a guy in stadium taking photos with it. The autofocus must be quite okay. Unless the ad is exaggerating.

It's a nice companion to a smartphone that doesn't have reach.

Canon PowerShot Zoom

Just some video samples below.

If you ask me this device is "ok". It's sort of an action cam with 400mm telephoto lens on it. Ofcourse pricey. You're limited to 1080p 30fps video and max 60 mins recording time (9 min file limit per movie).

It uses contrast detect autofocus and from the samples they look quite fast.

Also there is no tripod mount, you'll need a DIY solution if you're going to want this on a tripod.

My personal opinion, I'd rather get something like this then spending say $1000 on an S22 ultra with only 240mm focal length. Although you do get 4K video with that.
