I've just bought a GH6 and am in general quite happy about it.

However, I've noticed that the sharpness of the EVF is much lower when A-, S-, M-, P-, Cx-modes are chosen versus when chosing "Creative Video Mode".

It creates fatigue to the eyes as you constantly try to get optimal focus with your eyes, which is not possible.

The issue is most visible when you're looking at something at far distance (infinity focus).

I've checked another camera in a shop and it turns out to have the same behavior, so it seems to be a generic GH6 issue.

Can other users of this camera verify whether this is the case for them also?

To best see the issue:

(1) put the turnwheel on Creative Video Mode, focus on something at far distance; you'll see that the image through the EVF is perfect.

(2) now turn the turnwheel to any other mode, and you'll see the screen "switch" with (much) less sharpness.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hi Dirray,

Yes, I notice a drop in sharpness when switching from 5.8K in Creative Video mode to any of the photo mode dial positions. In testing with my PL 50-200mm it's most noticeable on text when viewed at a distance, however, on tree limb buds the effect is less noticeable.

The sharpness loss is subtle, but noticeable. Not so egregious for my eyesight that it would cause fatigue. "Enough of a difference for acquiring optimal manual focus?", now that I've seen the difference I would prefer the clarity of the Creative Mode EVF resolution while taking photos.

Would it be nice that the photo modes enjoyed the same level of sharpness as Creative Video mode? You bet! Perhaps a firmware update will fix the issue. I filed a Bug Report here...

...perhaps you'd like to file one, too?

Are you reading, Panasonic?

When you use a lower video resolution, like 4K or FHD, does the EVF image become even sharper?

You are correct

I finally managed to replicate the issue and there is something going on with the EVF in video. It appears to have to do with contrast more than anything else and it could have to do with the gamma curve and using 0-1023 range instead of 64-940 as it does in photos

However I would not go as far as saying that your eyes would struggle

I am going to have a look at my GH5M2 it is possibly a feature

Hi Interceptor121, etal,

The path for the link I provided to file a bug report for a Lumix camera here in the United States can be found here...

LUMIX Support - Panasonic North America

https://eng-ca.faq.panasonic.com/app/lumix/home?rd=37281

...select Cameras...

Landing for above link.

...and that same linked page now provides a list of options. Scroll to the bottom of that page and click on the link for Email (USA) as seen below...

Clicking on Email (USA) takes one to link provided.

...and it takes one to the link I provided previously...

Untitled Page:

Screenshot of provided link.

...once there one would select *Product Category>Camera/Camcorder, then select *Sub-Product Category>Mirrorless Camera, then select *Subject>Firmware Request, as shown in the above screenshot. Then fill in the remaining * required fields.

Under *Description I submitted the following Bug information with a link to this DPR discussion...

<<

Bug Report DC-GH6: EVF resolution drop when changing from Creative Video mode to any Photo Mode.

As noted here...

Question to GH6 owners related to EVF sharpness: Micro Four Thirds Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review
https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4643184

...there is a noticeable difference in EVF resolution with Creative Video mode vs any of the Photo Modes (i.e. P, A, S, M, etc.). EVF resolution is greater in Creative Video Mode and drops in sharpness when switching to any of the Photo Modes.

Firmware fix?

I hope that helps clarify the seemingly odd link URL.

Do you have a direct number for Panasonic "official customer support" to share to this thread that might help out fellow Lumix/GH6 users looking to file Bug Reports?

Fully agree with you; I also issued a problem ticket.

For me it will come too late anyhow, as I returned the camera and switched to an R5C.

Hi Dirray,

Finding the right gear for our needs and desires can certainly be an iterative process...there's nothing "quite perfect" and sometimes it comes down to just how much "stink factor" we're willing to tolerate! Ha! Best journeys with that R5C, I hope it gets you closer to your goals...and thanks again for pointing out the GH6 EVF difference, I might not have noticed it for some time.

Anyhoo, for those following along...filing a Bug Report will generate an automated response from Panasonic (advising one to perform a firmware update) and a Case Number with a "ref" (reference?) code number. If one replies to that email it will allow one to followup with their bug report (and provide further details if one so chooses) to Panasonic....which I did, so let's see what (if anything) happens.
