Good ol' nifty fifty

I purchased it to complement my EOS RP, always wanted a large aperture 50mm lens on a full frame camera, and it doesn't disappoint. Surely the mating with the RP doesn't make it a compact package (not compared than using the RF equivalent) with the adaptor needed, but still surprisingly light. I like the matte finish on the body and the design is fairly handsome compared to its predecessor. Not as good as the RF equivalent, but not offensively ugly for sure.

Image quality, being affordable that it is, it's not the sharpest lens out there, I find it better at f/2.8 at the large opening, and (obviously) subsequently improve as you stopped down until f/11. f/2.8 is still (much) larger than a kit lens would give anyway. A bit of vignetting and bowel distortion but doesn't degrade the sharpness from corner-to-corner too much. f/1.8 turns out to have an very shallow depth of field I've never encountered and I rarely need to get really close to the subject (people, animals) for background separation. The bokeh itself.. isn't that smooth, kinda busy sometimes, but not offensively distracting. I doubt people on Instagram would notice the busy bokeh anyway.

AF motor is a bit noisier than I like, but is fast & accurate. It totally can keep up with the RP's continuous AF (servo? I still don't understand servo vs continuous in Canon system), but a bit juddery when the motor moves only a tiny degree to adjust the focus. The focus ring being electronically coupled isn't the best implementation out there but highly appreciated for the relatively long throw.

I chose this over the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM because brand new, it's already less than half the price of the RF equivalent. I bought a third party adaptor which is much cheaper than Canon's official so it doesn't add too much to the total price. Another big reason is some reviewers I read concluded although the RF 50 has some improvements over the EF 50, it's not that much and I don't think it's worth the 2x price.

I agree, I have found a new appreciation for my EF 50mm STM on my ML R6 body.
