Max5150,

Sorry,Oh goodness no, not gonna repeat the same mistake twice, I got the SX220, same camera, minus GPS and shorter FL, but the lens is a tad faster (3.1-5.9) and Sharper! ( At the least my copy)
The only annoyance is the pop up flash coming up every time you power up the cam.,but I can live with that.

I have an SX240 that is the same camera as the SX260 without the GPS. Most pictures taken outside on a sunny day have a lot chromatic aberration. On zoom lenses, usually the problem is in the edges of the images, but with this camera it appears frequently in the center too. I tried to use smaller apertures, but it didn't reduce this problem. Was this the problem with your camera?

By the way, I also bought a used SX230 (same as the SX220 with the GPS) to replace the SX240. The image quality is much better!

Thanks RGBRGB,

And yes unfortunately, I should have done my homework better the first time when  I acquired the sx260, as it seems that there were many variations of this model, indeed in my copy, the lens, was nowhere near sharp as the SX220  W/A and F/T, and as you mentioned, the CA now that I recall, was more pronounced, bottom line, apart from the more tele zoom, that you get with sx260, the SX230/220 is a way better cam, ( got used at the pop up flash every time u turn on the cam:( ah did I mentioned that the battery last longer because It does not carry the GPS?;)…

I read some reviews, but none of them mentioned these problems. Maybe we got lemons.

As the SX230 is more than 10 years old, the battery that came with it certainly is not performing well. A little more juice would help. I think that I can disable the GPS. I hope it helps...

Yes you can turn GPS off in the SX230.

Those are brilliant results! all for 40 clams!

Any advice on something with range of 25-600mm that is in similar price range with decent AF?

Well, I think it may be a little hard to find what you looking for, you may have to spend more $$$, but definitely not impossible, as I said I had the SX260 x20 zoom( 25-500mm.equivakent) the lens was a big compromise, may be, I got a lemon, but my later findings confirmed that the SX220/230 overall, is a better camera, as x14 zoom (28-390mm.)is enough for me to carry in my pocket;)...

Glad to see and read of the good SX220 results.  Great robin shot.

I have two SX260s... and they are gems. Great color rendition, good photo quality, and the digital 2x tele-converter works like a charm. Lots of praise and accolades for the camera in this forum.

GPS is an energy drain only if you have it on.

The main issue with the SX260 line was the E32 error (do a search here for details). It's supposed to be a lens error, but may be caused by a cable issue.

One of my two cameras developed it. It's strange because the camera will work superbly for about a minute before that error appears. It also happens even when just reviewing photos -- i.e., no lens extended. So, there's some glitch in the electronics unrelated to zoom extension.

I've been tempted to get another SX260 -- didn't want to mess with the &%*$ pop-up flash on start up of the 220s. Besides for my bird photography, the extra zooming is crucial.

I have an ELPH 330 -- an amazingly small powerhouse of a camera. It's 10x zoom optical, with the same 2x converter. But it lacks full manual controls. But it's a treat as a plop into one's pocket for walks. Of course, it's best to use a small camera case -- and, at that point, the SX260 works even better.

I picked up a Canon SX720 from Canon's refurbished store for only $117. I'd buy another of those in a heartbeat if their prices ever got that low again! 40x zoom with excellent photo quality.
