But it is subjective, I saw this effect when I had GX80, other people don't or see or they do it but do not care. It would be best if you could try it before buying.

That shows something that your eye can detect, but not see, ie looking through the VF does not look like that, only moving your eyes around the frame will you see a slight rainbow effect, that video makes the rainbow effect constant and pronounced.

I'd be curious to know if anyone actually perceives the VF like that, my eyes are still very good (40yo and no issues/glasses) and the effect is very clearly there, but very minor perception wise. The VF is so small (but perfectly usable) I dont find my eyes dart around it much, I also have most info off on the displays.

A good thing to highlight, and good reason to get you hands on one first, I just risked it and was pleasantly surprised that it wasnt nearly as bad as made out.

Also that youtube channel has some great reviews and info, his G9 review really helped seal the deal for me XD

I never see those on the evf of my GX7/85...

GX7 was my main camera from 2015-2019, GX85 had been briefly my main camera before my wife took it from me, but still shooting with it from time to time in last 7 years...

I think I should belong to the group of user having poor eyesight: wearing spectacle since teenage for the myopia and astigmatism, age gives me presbyopia that I have to change to progressive spectacles some 10+ years ago. Basically I can't see without my glasses.

But I never see the evf of GX7/GX85 do like that as per the footage. If the evf of GX7/GX85 will look like that, it will 200% a deal breaker to me and I won't buy GX85 in 2016. As a matter of fact I never buy new released model and normally shall wait until the gear will be on discount. GX85 was the first time in many years that I paid the full listed price.

There could be a lot of information floating around, but we should filter them smartly, specially when there were so many opposite opinion from GX7, GX85, GX9 owners over the years...

In order to make the record right, might I post a footage which was just taken a few minutes ago about the evf of my GX85 FYI:

The above short footage was originally taken by G85 using 4K @30fps under Video-S mode, 1/60", Auto ISO, Cinelike-V and been downscaling to 1080 by the VSDC Free Video Editor (for posting to You Tube).

As a matter of fact, what I saw on the evf of GX7/GX85 is actually very similar (of course in a much smaller vision) to what will be displayed on the LCD of the camera (in 4:3 mode the viewable area of the evf should be reduced from 2231 x 1255 = 2.8M dot to 1672 x 1255 = 2.1M dot. However the resolution of the LCD is only 1.04M dot, so the reduced size evf is actually still having more detail (and brighter as well).

To give an idea on how the size of evf of GX7/85/9 will compare to other cameras, DPR had some good information (I merged them) as below:

P.S. when shooting in 4:3 mode, around 12.5% on either side (total 25% of the width. height unchanged) would be black out.

I wish this might clear up this matter.

Hi,

I had the GX80 and now have the GX9. Both have the same size viewfinder (the GX80's doesn't tilt). I've been lucky and never experienced any tearing or refresh problems with either. I would like to add the following observations:

1) The viewfinder is small but I don't find it a problem even after using my G9 (which has a beautiful, clear, large OLED evf)

2) The unused space at each side of the viewfinder in 4x3 format leaves room for the histogram to be displayed permanently without obscuring any of the view through viewfinder

3) The GX80 and Panasonic 14-140 are a great combination and balance well (in my hands) without being too heavy.

I hope this helps.

Cheers, Brian

Thank you

I own this camera and the Oly version of that lens, having switched from Oly bodies because I liked the GX's 4K photo features. I think that's a smokin' hot deal, and I think you'll really like it IF you use the EVF for framing/composition and not for pixel peeping. I know some people see some things that are objectionable in there, but I sure don't. (I know, YMMV.)

My only complaint with the camera is I'm left-eyed, and consequently leave nose prints on the back of the touchscreen whenever I use the EVF.    That would be true of most cameras, though (including the Oly's I used to shoot and the Nikons before that), and is not a criticism specific to the GX85.

It is worth reading my follow up posts with more info that I discovered over time.

The item is well worth reading.  I can add nothing more.  Yes, I have both the Pan GX7 and the an GX85.  Like them both.

Peace.

From DPR review

Review: Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 impresses with image quality, versatility: Digital Photography Review (dpreview.com) (Performace section)

However, one major area the GX85 falls flat in terms of performance is its electronic viewfinder. This field-sequential LCD panel is simply put, not very good. Keep in mind, it is the same panel from the GX7, which debuted back in 2013. Three years ago, this EVF may have cut it, but having used cameras like the GX8 and Olympus PEN-F, which use much more modern, higher magnification OLED panels, the GX85's feels dated.

Because colors channels refresh one at a time, panning or zooming with your eye to the finder can result in color tearing. And when using the EVF while the camera is set to continuous AF, the rapid lens hunting combined with color tearing is a recipe for a headache. Adding to the EVF woes, Panasonic gave the panel a 16:9 aspect ratio (presumably to cater to video shooters). But when shooting in the sensor's native aspect ratio of 4:3, the scene viewed through the EVF is quite small. Simply put, I found little to like about the GX85's 2.76M-dot field sequential EVF.

"

The LCD sequential field panel does not bother me at all. Of course i see the difference when moving from the g9 to the gx80 but the latter is perfectly usable for my use case.

Paired with the 14-140 you have a perfect traveller's kit.

Add the 4k photo and post focus features in addition to a usable touch LCD screen and 'easy' human interface and you have a superb camera that's also fun to use.

Cheers
