Not saying D100 is less, I really like/prefer the depth and contrast of D810, it's very similar to my D850.

I would say the old camera holds up pretty well given the sensor size. Obviously lower resolution but still pleasant looking output. D100 has same or similar sensor to D70 and later D50, right? The D50 was my first DSLR and me and my wife did our first wedding shoot with a pair of D50s. I still have two D50's!

Maoby, love your camera comparions!

I see that it's been a theme from you to compare the first gen CCD cameras vs recent CMOS DSLRs.

Personally, I DO prefer those first gen sensors over any modern CMOS.

I'll dive into the same idea myself, I'll be shooting and mixing my recently purchased D1x and D200 with my DMF Hassy, all of them side by side in the very same shoots.

Have you considered adding DMF to your collection of comparisons?

Here's a "cheap" 31mp CCD Hassy in action.

Nowadays it's quite cheap, and still produce stunning results.

I'd LOVE with capital letters to see you compare one of these with a D850.

About 10 years ago I did compare side by side a D800 vs Phase One P40+

And a D700 vs Mamiya DM22.

Unfortunately time has been short nowadays to continue these comparisons, but I enjoy a lot yours, please keep always posting!

Best regards,

Thanks a lot, that's nice of you

I still have a lot of cameras that I would like to compare, but unfortunately, my budget is not unlimited.

Here are just some of the cameras that I would like to acquire, for my comparisons.

Contax Digital N 2002
Epson R-D1 2004
Leica R8 Digital 2005
Hasselblad H1D 2005
Leica M8 2006
Mamiya ZD 22MP 2006
Olympus OM-D E-M1X 2019
Nikon Z9 2021

Maybe someday.

For the moment I have to be satisfied with my 77 acquisitions.

The DOF of the Fx camera is thinner. This is particularly obvious on the last set. For a meaningful comparison the aperture on the Fx camera should have been closed down one stop.

As explained many times to the O/P, this is quite a bit of efforts and I'm thankful for that. But why put so much energy in getting results that do not accomplish the goal: "compare sensors". More than anything else the comparison is about the JPEG processing, and, in this case, different DOF as well.

Sorry for the delay, always busy around here

I really do love your comparisons Maoby. In a way, what you do is what keeps my interest in photography ever fresh.

I select digital cameras picking up sensors like they were film stocks, as in "today I want to go with a D200 CCD, today a D3X CMOS, now a Dalsa CCD, now a Foveon, etc" in the same way someone chooses Portra or Velvia, or Ektar, etc.

Whenever I have a shoot coming up, I try to select at least 3 cameras of very different sensor technologies for the day.

Your comparisons always fascinate me, because you've done it for far more camera flavours than anyone else.

For those who have a similar way of seeing digital images, those comparisons are always refreshing and awesome.

I still have a lot of cameras that I would like to compare, but unfortunately, my budget is not unlimited.

Contax Digital N 2002

haha good luck on that one

Leica M8 2006

Mamiya ZD 22MP 2006

I have those 2 above. Both render in such a distinct way, a render you can't find anywhere else regardless of specs.

Both among my favorite ever.

Maybe someday.

For the moment I have to be satisfied with my 77 acquisitions.

Thank you, it's good to know that there are photographers who understand my approach, and who seem to like it.

An anecdote concerning the Contax, a French collector sent me this photograph to tease me.
He has four Contax Digital !!

And I'm jealous of the Leica M8 and especially the Mamiya ZD 22MP

You seem to me to be a real enthusiast, good luck in your future projects.

Not just like it, LOVE IT with capital letters!

noooooooooo way !!!!!

Now you got us both drooling! WOW!

The N digital was on my radar some years ago, until I realized how rare and expensive they are haha

Back to the film analogy, to shoot one of those nowadays, would be like shooting Kodachrome in 2022, both in finding the film stock and somehow getting it developed.

Oh my!!

Look at the mint condition as well... wooooow

Count me desperate haha !!

Just for fun, did he ever mentioned for how much $$$...infinitely more $$...$$$$ he would sell one for you?

Super curious! I bet a house or 2 and a Ferrari

And I'm jealous of the Leica M8 and especially the Mamiya ZD 22MP

Ok I cheated a little bit haha

I had a Leaf Aptus back (22 mp) and now the same exact back, but Mamiya branded.

Both are variants of the same 22mp Dalsa CCD used in the ZD.

Although I pretty much have the same sensor here, I wanted the ZD camera itself, but legend says the AF is quite prone to failing.

So it went out of the radar.... for now at least

Love those exotic cameras, that you go out shooting, and not even a hardcore photographer knows its existence.

You seem to me to be a real enthusiast, good luck in your future projects.

Yup, love these cameras, specially the vintage CCD variants.

Very recently I got a mint D1x for mere 130 bucks, and will take it to expensive shoots side by side with my Hassy.

I know that would make half DPR's population cringe very hard, a 2001 APS-C Nikon and a Hassy shooting together...

But yeah, we're going that hole haha

Please keep doing your awesome work

He had asked me to find him a Kodak DCS 100 + DSU as an exchange.
Unfortunately, I haven't heard from him for over two years.

Marcio I think about sensors the same way. The output is akin to selecting different films. I do like to collect. Ebay allows some of these to be picked up for a song. I always look for mint copies.

Kodak DCS army

Maoby, whatever people said in the past, those Kodaks are amazing today.

Right now they have the same flavor as retrogaming (for those interested in gaming).

It carries all the nostalgia, all the fun, without needing 1 bit to compete with modern day tech.

The fun is exactly that, they are they own thing.

I mean, look at those F90x (my favorite ever film camera), with digital guts!

And those F5 (for many the best film camera ever)

And the F3 in the center, that looks like some sort of Hollywood movie tech, like an Imax camera.

The best analogue has to offer, with improvements tailor made to satisfy professionals of its time.

Simply amazing, absolutely love it.

Best regards,
