100V lens cap - take care

I have only just noticed that if I turn the camera on with the lens cap still on, in setting up the lens will protrude far enough to push the standard metal cap away from the body. The same applies to the soft rubber lens caps (See Photospeed 55mm) that I use in place of the standard article which, though lovely, is easy to dent and not cheap to replace.

I don't think this happened to any of my previous X100s -although I might be wrong. This may be because the extra protrusion of the lens - when focussing at close as possible - is due to the new lens on this camera. It can be seen most easily by switching to manual focus and then winding the focussing ring round as far as possible. The new lens is great, as is the close focusing, but, if, like me you often manage to put the camera bag into your bag either forgetting to turn it off, or accidentally turn it on as you push it into the bag, then I don't think it will do the focussing mechanism any good to undergo the strain of pushing off the lens cap.

My current solution is to buy a lens hood and adapter of the type which is pretty slim and has a small hole in the hood. Because the hood screws on to the adapter, as opposed to it being a bayonet fitting, it is low profile enough so that when just the adapter is fitted it does not cast a shadow at the bottom of the pic when the flash is used. Unfortunately this does of course increase the depth of the camera a little, but just having the adapter permanently fitted does also offer a little protection (I am not using a UV filter) and is something for the left hand to hold on to.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Kind regards,

Very odd.

Just checked and this doesn't seem to be an issue with my X100V (even without the dress ring) and, given the camera was released a couple of years ago, I would have thought it would have cropped up in forums like this before now.  Maybe worth getting yours checked?  If the conclusion is there's nothing wrong then I suppose one option would be to add a protective front filter (which also increases weather resistance).

Kind regards,

With the Haoge WR hood/filter solution (and, I’m sure, others) there is no external motion and the original lens cap still fits nicely.
