Used x100f/xe3 prices... good/best value for money?

Hi everyone

It’s quite a while since I posted, but I wanted to get your thoughts on some prices for used x series cameras.

I come from my lovely S100FS which has been my companion since its launch and I really loved using that camera. I’m really used to it and eventually I wanted a “next step” but sadly, economics never allowed it.

Now, I’m finally in a position I might get some new gear. I do photography occasionally, and I mostly do landscapes and people (family gatherings, friends and such) and the X series has always had a special place in my heart: always wanted it, could never afford it.

Without budget constraints, my ideal setup would be an x100 + an xe with the 18-135 and maybe another prime, but clearly, this is not the case…

The compactness of the x100 is just what I want (don’t mind that much the fixed lens) and an x100v would be ideal (but it’s quite out of my budget). I love everything that it can do and what it brings to the table and, honestly, I could go for an x100f as WR is nice but not mandatory for me, I don’t really do video, so no big loss there, and I can’t justify the price difference just because of the new film sims (yeah, the new lens is sharper and all, but I can hardly justify the price difference on this ground, as the x100f lens is not garbage). In short, x100v would be ideal, but it’s out of my budget, so the x100f is a realistic option for me…

I’ve also considered an XE with the xf27 to get the same compactness, but when I think of getting a flash for it, some NDs and not having that wonderful flash sync of the x100, the costs add up to get the same features... Sure, I get the option of having other lenses, but I don’t travel that much so as to *need* the zoom lens, it’s just that it would be a nice addition (not to mention, all those accesories go against the compactness I'd like).

I’ve started looking at some used gear and I think I’ve found some interesting deals. Bear in mind that, in my country, imports carry a 30% tax so I’ll discount that from the current local prices as to offer a fair comparison to what one could get in the US.

For reference, a new X100F with a 32Gb card is going for 2000USD, and I found someone selling a used one + 2batteries at ~625 USD. This camera doesn´t look that bad in the pictures and the owner states that it was bought in 2017 and has ~43000 shots with it, but I would need to check it in detail to see if it’s actually in good condition.

I also found a used Xe3+XF18-55 with ~1500 shots for 1060USD. The owner states never used it much, as it was bought for travelling just before the pandemic and hasn’t been used in over 18 months, so it’s basically new (for reference, a new one with the same lens is going for 1230USD). A new xe3, body only, is going on for ~770USD.

So my questions are as follows:

- Considering my intended use, would I lose too much from getting an xe3 Vs x100f? I would only gain changing lenses, but that’s it… Is there a reason to actually get the xe3? Price would be the only driver… I think… but I don’t know if there’s something else that I’m missing…

- Considering the use that x100f has had… at that price would be a good buy? I’m tempted to say yes (but of course, I would check it in person with the owner before pulling the trigger). There are quite some people negotiating it with him and the price has lowered from 830 to 625USD…

- Would that used Xe3+lens be a better value, compared to that used x100f? Or the xe3 body only for that matter? I could get some other les down the road as I don’t need to use the camera immediately (but it would be nice to have a useable camera soon).

I would really appreciate your opinions and I really thank you for your valuable time!

Have a nice weekend!

I bought my X-E3 in late 2019 and I wanted the X100f at the time.  But I couldn't justify the cost.  I've been very pleased with my X-E3.  I also got the XF27mm to go with it, but it is nice to swap out to the XF18-55 or XF35mm f/1.4.

If I need flash, I use a Godox TT350f.  The built in ND of the X100F is certainly appealing, but I haven't found myself missing shots because I didn't have it.

Basically, for me the X100 is a heart purchase, but realistically the X-E3 is more practical, and you change lenses on it.

I tried the fixed lens 100s,its great but I sold it due to inflexibility.

My opinion is there are 2 types of buyers of the 100 series.

Firstly the people who only want one camera and are prepared to zoom with their feet.Sure their are add ons to change FL slightly.

Then the people who can afford the 100 to have in their pocket when they dont want to take their system.(GR also fits with them)

So versatility wins for me, being able to shoot wide or telephoto matters.ymmv.

My x100f is probably the camera I use the most. Easy to carry, eminently capable, great photos.

43,000 seems like a lot of usage.

I've bought several cameras and lenses from Map Camera on e-bay. Perhaps that's an option. They are in Japan if that makes any difference.
