Advise: using Canon R with kit lens OR adaptor +EF 24-70 f4 IS L

Hello,

I am about to purchase Canon R, which I know it is a great camera. I used to shoot until with Canon 5d Mark II with several lenses like EF 70-200 F4 L IS or EF 24-70 F4 IS L.

I sold most of my EF lenses, but still having EF 24-70 F4 IS L (I am intending to sell it as well) which is great as quality and pictures taken with it.

So I am thinking in purchasing either Canon R alone and attach it a RF - EF adaptor and 24-70 F4 IS L and using this system as my main travel/architecture/landscape purposes OR for same general purposes buying Canon R with RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM (non L) lens kit. And after 1-2 years I will start to buy and use high quality fixed focal length for portraits, product photography, etc not necessary from L range, but fixed length (50mm, 85mm).

I am not sure in the if the picture quality (and video) up to 70mm can be compared between the two lenses, the new RF and the older EF. Is it worth the new RF kit lens for general purposes?

Do you have pictures/samples taken with Canon R and RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM lens, but also with Canon R + adaptor + EF 24-70 L IS f4 ? What are your thoughts about these  two different setups for travel/architecture/closeups/landscape photography?

I know that the kit lens is not high quality, but it's cheaper and especially smaller and lighter, so very easy to travel with.

Thank you all,

Val

I'd say the choice depends on how much you shoot in the 24-35mm region and how much you value light weight. I have an R and both the 24-105 4-7.1 and the F4L IS version. I've owned the 24-70 4L IS but not while owning the R so never used it on that camera. It should function perfectly though. With the adapter it will be significantly heavier than the kit lens.

The 24-105 4-7.1 is actually a very good lens from 35-105. I'd rate it as decent at 28mm with some edge/corner softness and the edges/corners are worse at 24mm due to distortion correction but most of the frame is very good.

If it is possible to buy the R with the 24-105 4-7.1 and still keep the 24-70 for when you're working on the wide end that would be one possible solution.

The 24-105 4L IS is the lens to get for the R if IQ at the wide end is important as it is significantly better in the 24-35 range. On a recent trip I settled on using a rather strange combo with my RP w 24-105 4-7.1 and my adapted 16-35 4L IS. Overall, it still was a relatively light setup with excellent IQ and covering 16-105 which was very useful for landscape type shots.

The kit 24-105 is a nice lens that has some limitations at its wide end but provides a useful FL range and is light and easy to carry. If you can splurge for the f4L IS version that is an excellent all around zoom but a good bit heavier than the slower one. If you can supplement the wide end of the kit lens with another lenses to cover 24-35 then that's a good combo. Unfortunately only 2 rather expensive native RF UWA zooms exist at the moment. The EF 16-35 4L IS is excellent adapted but rather large/heavy.

Hope some of this helps.

My advice is on the camera body. The R may be showing its date. Recommend R5 or R6. Lens would recommend sell the f4 and get the RF24-105 f4 L as a kit.

Thank you.

Canon R is good for shooting some outdoor action/sports? as 8fps is good, not great, but ok, from my point of view.

Is the lag still happens in the viewfinder while shooting in burst mode subjects moving quickly after latest firmware updates?

If the EF 24-70 f4 L gives you great quality and pictures taken with it, then just get the body. I don't think the variable aperture zoom would compare to the L.  EF lenses that are good on the old 5D bodies work better on the EOS R because of it's on sensor focus.

Thank you for your feedback.

I've seen that you shot some animal/action pictures with Canon R and the focus area and subject are pretty sharp, even in that picture with dog running.

Is any EVF lag (or how often) when shooting animals or action sports?

That's highly dependent upon each individual's photog "needs", preferences, and of course budget.

IMO for the price of the R6 it should have 30MP sensor; i.e., "RF" updated version of the 5D Mark IV.

The EOS R is just fine for my photog "needs", preferences, and budget.

I am using the 24-70/4 L with a RF adapter on a R5 and like it very much. I had the RF 14-35/4 and 24 - 105/4 for a couple of months and sold both, because I did not feel that they provide meaningful upgrade to my existing EF 16-35/4 L and 24-70/4 L. In the mean time, with a drop-in filter adapter, it is much easier to use filters with the EF lenses. Since I only need  bring one adapter with me, the EF pair and RF pair take about the same room in my camera bag. I do like the RF 70-200/4 L though, because it is much more compact and lighter than anything before it.

Yes, the EVF lags.  It can be hard to keep the small focus point on the dog.  On where the dog's eye actually is in real time since you are seeing a lagging video of it in the EVF.  You can use a larger focus area box and let the camera select the point if the subject is really moving erratically.  Easier to keep the large box on the subject.

I use servo AF and spend a moment or two letting the servo track before fully pressing the shutter.  It also gives me a chance to establish that I am tracking the subject.  Servo seems to do a pretty good job.

You will miss more action shots with the R than the newer R6 or R5 but you will still get a decent number of good shots.

Well, as I see plusses and minuses of 24-105 f/4-7.1 over 24-70/4:

+ longer telephoto end

+ native RF lens, no need to use adapter (size, weight)

+ quieter AF motors for video

- remarkably worse image quality

- cheap build quality compared to 24-70/4

-  slow aperture

If I had to choose from these two only, I would with no doubt stay with EF 24-70/4. But If I would be looking for a best affordable lens in this focal lengths, I would not hesitate to buy RF 24-105/4 L.

It is optically superior to EF 24-70/4 (and thus much better than RF 24-105/4-7.1), is the native RF lens, has the longer end and is noticeably better built that its slower counterpart.

Re: Advise: using Canon R with kit lens OR adaptor +EF 24-70 f4 IS L

One problem people haven't mentioned: EF 24-70F4L can seem rather long and front-heavy when mounted on EOS R with an adapter, defeating much of the appeal of that lens as a compact L standard zoom. RF 24-105F4-7.1 is practically invisible in comparison. I bring this up since you mention travel as one of your applications, where size and handling can be a big deal.
