R5C Tamron Lens Compatibility Issues

Hi,

Got my R5C yesterday, and autofocus isn't workting with the following Tamron lenses I own:

35mm f/1.4

24-70 2.8 G2

70-200 2.8 G2

I also just happened to buy the 15-30 G2 a couple of days ago and waiting for it to come in. Got a sneaking suspicion it won't work either.

Autofocus works just fine in stills mode, btw. Just doesn't work in video.

I know the R5C *just* came out.. but has anyone else had this issue yet?

I own the above Tamron 24-70 G2, and it works well on my C300 MK III . I will try it on my R5c tomorrow.

hello,

I tried my Tamron EF 24-70 mm G2 on my R5c and had the same experience as you had, no AF. I then put it back onto my C300 Mk III and the AF worked perfectly. I wonder if it has anything to do with the Canon EF-RF adapter?

Addendum:  I've just sent off an email to Tamron Technical Support to see if they are aware of the issue and if they anticipate a solution.

Re: R5C Tamron Lens Compatibility Issues

I also own a Tamron 35mm 1.4 Di USD, and when I received it, I took two test shots and it looked okay. But then I took it to a shoot right after and for some reason I couldn't get it to focus, so I used other lenses for the rest of the shoot.

Once I got home, I tested it again and it worked fine. Then I used it for another shoot, and it worked perfectly the entire shoot. And I've been using it as my main lens since then and it's worked perfectly with almost 100% focus rate.

I don't recall if I was using firmware 1.5.0 or 1.5.1. And I just noticed that this thread is about the R5C, and not the R5. But I already wrote all that and it's not helpful, and I'm posting it anyway.

AF works fine in video mode also, for what it's worth.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

I've just checked the lens' firmware with the Tap-in device and it has the latest version. It appears to be specific to the R5c, while the only other variable might be the Canon EF-RF adapter. We'll see what Tamron has to say about the issue, assuming that they respond to my email.

I've just heard back from Tamron support and, to paraphrase, "we do not test with cinema cameras...," in essence, good luck with that.  It appears that we are out of luck with the Tamron G2 lenses and the R5c.  Oddly enough, it works quite well with my C300 MK III CINEMA CAMERA. I guess that the ball is in Canon's court now.

So Canon is responsible for a third party lens not working properly?

I guess you had missed the sarcasm

Hi TizOnly1,

Having the same problem with my Tamron 15 - 30 G2. Did you find a solution?

Conversation with Tamron Support had revealed that "they do not test their lenses with CINE  cameras," and have no intention of doing so.  I doubt that there will be a fix coming from their end.  They did say that, although the lens will not AF in video mode it should function in 'photo' mode.  Oddly enough, the Tamron G2 24-70 mm that I have does AF with my C300 MK III.

I have a C70 and R5C, and everything works perfectly with the C70. Doesn't work with R5C.

Re: R5C Tamron Lens Compatibility Issues

Hello Everyone.

This is the Problem with my Lens also. But the solution is we need to update lens firmware or change the Power circuit of the lens.

As same lens with high power circuit was working fine with the Canon r5c. But mine with the regular power circuit was not working with my Canon r5c

Re: R5C Tamron Lens Compatibility Issues

What do you mean by that power circuit method?

Re: R5C Tamron Lens Compatibility Issues

Has anyone found a solution to this issue ... i believe its a limitation that Canon has put as the R5C draws quiet a bit of power especially in the video mode.

I think you're right about it being a power issue, and no.. sadly haven't found a workaround.

Sigma lenses work in AF with the R5c, and oddly enough, the Tamron lenses work in AF with my Canon C300 Mk III, just not with the R5c.  Some time ago, I had contacted Tamron and had been told that they had no plans to address the issue, case closed.
