I agree with you. It's unthinkable that a $3000 telephoto zoom lens whose primary purpose is wildlife can't effectively use the company's own extenders. I'm happy that the 100-400 can.

For aircraft the bare 100-500 can be a tad short but more flexible in zoom. I found the 100-400 MKII on the 7D2 pretty ideal, as it was effectively a 160 - 640 lens.

I will have to respectfully disagree with your statement. When out walking, I've used the full range of my zooms. If I was prevented from zooming out because of an interference, the shot could be lost and that would be an issue.
